Happy Birthday Lil Baby! Additionally, congratulations cause this is my song of the year!
'Sum 2 Prove' dropped on January 10th 2020 which was a stacked day in terms of releases with 'Life Is Good' and 'Good News' dropping on the same day. The only two Lil Baby songs that I had listened to before this had dropped were 'Drip Too Hard' and 'Whoa' which were two tremendous trap bangers that were very unique in their own way. Although both of the two songs that I mentioned are amazing, 'Sum 2 Prove' stood out as special, something that kept me going in 2020, even when I thought that there was no where to go.
The happiest I've been in 2020 was on the day this track released. I was at the airport, about to go on vacation when the song dropped and since I had nothing better to do, I chose to listen to the song. As soon as the song started, I was hooked, with the electrifying production flowing through my ears, instantly exciting me for Baby's introduction on the track. When Baby appeared, he did NOT disappoint oozing determination as he slid on the beat, spitting out lyrics that were bold while using a flow that fit perfectly along with the production. Baby continued to match his cadence each time he switched up his flow while making sure that people understood that he wasn't meant to be played with, talking about how he was out in the streets with nothing and still rose to the top. On the first verse, he had already switched up his flows so many times, coming up better flows each time, keeping me hooked time after time. That's when the chorus came and shook me literally, with Baby coming up with a catchy hook that stuck to me throughout the year whenever I felt like giving up. Each line was meaningful to me, with Baby making sure that everyone heard what he had to say, showing everyone that it was his turn to shine after people never payed attention to him and never took him seriously. Baby continues to stun in his second verse where he starts by talking about how people always want something from him even when they weren't there for him and that no one can mimic what he does cause he's special. The drums completely cut out at the second half of this verse which was wonderful to listen to and elevated the song to whole different level, as he makes sure that every single word is heard as he slows down his flow too. Right as he's at the peak of his verse, the chorus comes in super strong once again creating a booming effect. The chorus hits harder and harder each time it appears, increasing my motivation every time I listen to it. When I heard this song for the first time, I knew that 2020 was Lil Baby's year without any doubt and the track confirmed that Lil Baby was one of my favorite artists that I've listened to.
2020 did end up being Lil Baby's year, hate him or not. Lil Baby has sold the most units for a single project that released in 2020, stayed on the charts for almost the entire year, grabbed a whole lotta plaques, got snubbed by so many awards, and won the Apple Music Artist of the Year. 'Sum 2 Prove' has gone platinum along with getting a peak position of number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 3 on the US Rolling Stone Top 100. Additionally, this wasn't his only major hit, having released songs like 'We Paid' and 'The Bigger Picture' later on the year. Also, thank you Twysted Genius for this great beat, the production on this track is one of the most underrated factors of the song with the energetic, electrifying insturmental and the excellent drum patterns which were some of the best I've heard, although the transitions sounded a little cheap. Don't sleep on Baby!!
'Sum 2 Prove' is the perfect song to me. The song is my most played song of 2020 with hundreds of plays on the song and hours of listening time on the song. The way Baby switches his flows with ease, the lyrics that I love and keep me going, and the chilling production kept me coming back to this song. I'll never forget this song for the rest of my life, it's a timeless classic.
