This is glorious. I discovered it today while reading my Another Green World 33 ⅓ book by Geeta Dayal. Apparently Brian Eno plays clarinet here (and may or may not have produced the record, though my sources conflict).

The concept behind the Portsmouth Sinfonia is that the collective, composed of art students, musicians, and the Renaissance type, is half-trained, and the vast majority—if not all the members—play instruments they are unfamiliar with. This makes for a discordant ... read more

I love every song, but I don’t think the project as a whole is all that cohesive. Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with the language barriers. I think the mix of three languages actually contributes to giving the record at least some identity. It’s that some of these songs just don’t go well together. “Insomnia” and “Tons de Azul” are both phenomenal, but do they really belong on an album together? Initial thoughts: The first 20 minutes had me really excited, but this album's quality really nosedives in the second half. These guys are better political commentators than they are musicians. Had they put as much effort into their music as they did the political theory essays they call lyrics, this would be one of my favorite albums. That first four-song run is incredible, though.

Final thoughts: Upon relistening, I'm liking this much more. There's still plenty to be desired from the ... read more

The lore is better than the project itself. It's cool that DSS was ahead of its time, but this isn't mind-blowing or anything. It's pretty solid plunderphonics, plain and simple. It may not be great, but it is certainly enjoyable. I could see myself putting this on for some background music while walking through the city. This is definitely a great introduction for the man who would eventually become JPEGMAFIA.
