MINI REVIEW:

After about four listens, I’d give ‘Positions’ by Ariana Grande a 7/10.

It’s not incredibly consistent, but the tracks are sequenced very well, so it’s not as noticeable. The engineering is God-sent, and the production is pretty stunning all the way through (the sole exception being “west side”). The subject matter and themes are fantastically tackled too, leading to some really good hooks. The only hook that didn’t catch me was ... read more

REVIEW

Track 01: “Double-O-Nine”
This is just the isolated vocals of “Back In the USSR” on top of the original James Bond theme. They’re in two different keys at a different bpm, with different chord progressions and a terrible mix. I love it.

Track 02: “Hel Elter”
It’s “Helter Skelter,” but every other beat is missing, so the hook goes, “Hel Elter,” instead. I actually enjoy this. Obviously I love the original, ... read more

MINI REVIEW:

The new Pink Siifu album is a heavy-weight contender for the weirdest project I’ve heard this year, and I mean that with the highest praise.

Intense, impassioned and emotive, the walls of sound and the flames of the modern political climate close in as you listen. This is an inspiring, adventurous combination of hip-hop, punk and the avant-garde. Aesthetically, the LP feels more like a piece to be displayed in a modern art museum than an album. A lot of 'accepted' ... read more

I've never been a huge fan of Quelle Chris' stuff, but this album clicked for me immediately. I can't stop replaying it. The intense atmosphere is haunting but emotionally resonant and envelops my ears with gorgeous, intricately thought-out instrumentation. Being so engaging, the album has something new to offer with each playthrough, and I find it hard to not be carried away by the textures that Chris Keys creates on this spiritual awakening. On top of it all, Quelle's bars here are as ... read more

SONG REVIEW:

~ Neeko, Deskhop & jetson killed this production. The engineering is really good, but there’s some empty space in the beat that could’ve been filled. Carti’s performance is great, with lots of energy and palpable emotion, and the repetitive schtick is as good as ever. I will concede that the ad-libs were swamped in the mix, though. ~

When thinking of what makes a good Carti song, I’m looking for a candy-coated beat that sounds really crisp, lots of ... read more

Mini Review: Best engineering I’ve heard all year. Kenny and Kev made every aspect of this record so crisp. Plus the instrumentalists here give it their all, especially the stand-up bassist. On top of it all, Milo drops some of his most entertaining verses since ‘So the Flies Don’t Come.’ All around, a phenomenal jazz rap release that isn’t entirely abstract, but the verses give it that feel.

Fav Tracks: “Greens,” “Laundry,” ... read more
