Mew - Frengers

Such an addictive record. I don't think this is anywhere near my usual stuff but man, it's so addictive. The production is perfect. You could tell me it came out this decade and I wouldn't question it. The layering and melodies are super solid all the way through. I keep catching myself humming every single one.

I love how smoothly it shifts from straight 4/4 into all kinds of weird time signatures without ever losing the groove. That dreamy vibe turning into straight lo-fi ... read more

Crazy debut EP. The first track hits so hard it's unbelievable. I really dig the super thick low end sound, but more than that it's just how raw it feels. Every track is just really good metalcore and the breakdowns hit hard.

Super solid good music. Go in expecting just another great addition to the catalog. Nothing innovative, but that's not what every record needs. It just needs good music.

I originally found myself not that captivated, not in a bad way. It just didn't get my attention like the LP but it clicked eventually. I went for a few other listens months later. The production is still my favorite. The drums sound huge and raw. I don't really know how to explain it but everything still sounds huge together.

I guess I was expecting another fromjoy album but this is a really good solid sequel or even then, a continuation of their sound. They have figured out what ... read more

ILLIT - It's Me

The chorus isn't horrible. I think what is holding this track back is the instrumental choice once the chorus hits. The verses and pre-chorus are solid, especially the last pre-chorus. That is the most repeat section in my opinion. I think songs can be judged on certain aspects, for something quick and listenable.

The vibe is there. I wouldn't go in expecting much considering the whole theme of the track is "who's your bias?" This is definitely out there compared to ... read more

Asking Alexandria - Stand Up and Scream

This is just really good metalcore. It has that crabc ore synth influence of course, but honestly this record just does it right. The vocal variety is there. Squeaky cleans, gutturals, and everything in between. This isn't some innovative album, or maybe for the time it was? I don't know. The guitars aren't anything crazy. Just octave chords and those 5-7-8 riffs. But that's exactly what you'd want from an album like this.

It's a good balance of breakdowns, ... read more

There are some heavy hitters. Medicate and Beautiful Thieves are tracks that I am constantly coming back to. There are some more tracks that I enjoy but it is far from perfect. Jade still hasn't lost his touch. He's not writing riffs with panic chords like before but he still knows how to cook, regardless of the genre. I do think if they kept the momentum of STS and DU, they would've been bigger but the same level. Like every AFI album, many will say they lost themselves and the ... read more

It's almost enough in each chorus but it stops before it sticks. The chorus is good but everything should have been double the length, especially the final chorus. I'm not gonna deny that the chorus hasn't been stuck in my head and the instrumental definitely is there but man, everything falls right before it picks up. Having a version with double choruses would push this up past a half score. Almost good, leaving more to be wanted but I definitely don't think it's ... read more

I don't know, he caught my attention with If You Wanna. The hype was there and I was super eager to hear what more there was on the record. I don't know how he went 2/10 with likable tracks but there really is nothing memorable. He needs to come back with a record in the style of IYW and BTM. Cash in on that revival sound but other than that, nothing to be missed. The production is there and it sounds great but production can't save everything. The songwriting still needs to be ... read more

It's a solid deathcore revival sound, or is it even a revival if the dude making it lived through the original wave? Either way it's just good old school deathcore. Nothing theatrical, no fancy melodies riding on 260bpm double bass. It's straight forward, just some good deathcore tracks that hit exactly how you want when you're craving that sound.

It definitely doesn't feel new, and that's fine. The riffs and structure feel like the same classic deathcore sound, ... read more

Bring Me The Horizon - Sempiternal

This was such a solid album for me. I remember hearing Sleepwalking for the first time and just being captivated in middle school. This was such a departure from the usual stuff I was listening to. Honestly, it was a time when music wasn’t my main interest but this album just hits.

The production is exactly what a record like this needed. I am definitely tired of the singles from this album. Can You Feel My Heart has long overstayed its welcome. But Empire, Snakes To Sing and Hospital ... read more

This album is just so good. I am absolutely not a fan of super downtuned metalcore but this doesn’t even click to me that it is. It still sits in the realm of modern metalcore while taking everything good from it and leaving the cons behind. This album front to back is super sick. I catch myself listening to a single track and then queuing most of the album after. The drum work is what caught my attention first. The mixing and the way the drums play everything is just insane. You have ... read more

I wasn’t a big MCR fan, I honestly only knew their singles, but I decided to dig into the discography and this album is just solid overall. I never realized the level of musicianship they were capable of. There are sections where the guitars are working in unison, then the next minute they’re doing completely different things and it still works.

This record goes way past the band and genre reputation, the songwriting and production really carry it. You’ll get panned vocals, ... read more

The intro track is one of the best to ever do it. This whole album is what melodic metalcore should sound like. I know I’m the 1000th person to say that, but this album is undeniable. The guitar work, the drums, the vocals, the composing, it’s all top notch. There are literally no complaints.

I love 5–7–8 riffs, but this album doesn’t lean on that much. It builds more around huge melodic chords and leads, with hard hitting drums behind them, then drops into some ... read more

I was always on the fence about this, but I ended up coming around to it. I finally gave it a proper listen after buying a physical copy, and yeah, I definitely slept on it. The intro track sets the tone right away and pulls you in.

They play around with a few different styles here, and tracks like Blue Blood and Hypnosis both land really well. There are a lot of solid songs overall, and I catch myself throwing on random tracks from this pretty often, even just to start the day. The production ... read more

I slept on this album way more than I did with Sing the Sorrow. I gave it a few tries at first and nothing really stuck, maybe one song at most. But after getting more into music and leaning toward weirder stuff, I came back to it and it finally clicked. Now I’m kind of blown away by it. Jade’s guitar work is still untouchable, especially the lead melodies, riffs, and all the layering going on. It’s really solid.

It does feel more poppy than STS, even if it’s not super ... read more

Bring Me The Horizon - Count Your Blessings

It’s not amazing and it’s definitely not perfect, and yeah a few songs drag a bit. But if you’re into that classic metalcore and deathcore mix with melodic riffs and solid breakdowns, this album still hits. Some of the guitar riffs are honestly insane, and there are a ton of bands out there that would kill to sound like this. The riffs also mix in just enough randomness that keeps things interesting. The lyrics are pretty much what you’d expect from this era, nothing ... read more

Honestly I kind of overlooked it when it first came out because I was still riding the Nostalgia Kills high, which is more my vibe. But coming back to it a few hours later, it has really settled into my head in a way I did not expect. It probably helps that I Don’t Love You was already lingering in my mind and made me realize how much I have been missing a song like this lately. It scratches that same ballad itch I have not felt in a while. The strings and the way the guitar melody ... read more

Undeniably one of my all-time records. Jade Puget’s guitar work is some of the most enthralling stuff out there. I remember hearing The Leaving Song Pt. II in NFL when I was younger and it never left my head. I finally dove into the full record only a few years ago after knowing just the singles for a decade, and I genuinely can’t believe how long I slept on this.

I catch myself relistening front to back all the time. Everyone plays their part perfectly, Jade, Davey, Hunter, and ... read more

This record feels different compared to the rest of my library. It has a great selection of melodies, with buttery smooth vocals that occasionally bring in some grit, while the guitars kind of do their own thing in setting the mood. What really stands out though is how well the band works together, everyone hits exactly what they need to and it all comes together to set the tone perfectly.

I really enjoy it as a nice listen, but it’s definitely more of a moody record in the sense that on ... read more
