DaBaby - BLAME IT ON BABY

DaBaby is a competent rapper. He has a great flow compared to his contemporaries, and chooses some great producers for a majority of his tracks. Where he comes unstuck however is in the songwriting. With a rapping style this rapid-fire and distinct, you don't need to be saying a whole lot to wow people, but when every song on your album has little to no depth, you need to switch your style up or your project is going to grow old fast. BLAME IT ON BABY is DaBaby's most realised effort yet, but it nosedives so hard in its second half it only just pushes beyond Baby on Baby and KIRK. Past ROCKSTAR with Roddy Ricch, this album falls flat on its face. No more is this seen that the horrid track NASTY, which manages to make Tyga look competent next to it. These cringe-inducing sexual lines leave such a sour taste in my mouth, not even Megan Thee Stallion can save it in the last half. It is by far the worst and most confusing spot on the project. However, the first half has quite a handful of tracks that really take the best of DaBaby's style and focus on his strengths. CAN'T STOP is a great opener, with a strangely manic ending that really sells the project. Similarly, PICK UP continues this high energy, with a great Quavo feature to boot. All up, it's great to see artists like DaBaby still releasing music despite the financial uncertainty of large music releases during this pandemic, and although only around half the songs here are memorable, it's still a much more commendable project compared to DaBaby's past work, and under it all there are still the promisings of greatness beyond a handful of hits.
