Daniel Avery - Love + Light
5d ago
Daniel Avery to me is an artist who unexpectedly seems to falls into the background. As a huge IDM fan, it's regrettable that he's fallen under my radar this much. However, even onto his third solo LP, I still can't find much in his music that sets him apart from the rest. In terms of up-and-coming artists, the closes comparison I could make would be to Floating Points, or maybe Skee Mask. Avery has a similarly methodical and cold presentation of the genre, stripping it back to its calculated bare necessities. Influences do rear their heads, especially the tonal palette at points heavily mirroring that of Autechre (albeit with very different progressional styles). At the beginning of the record, Avery puts his best foot forward after the ambient opener with Dusting for Smoke, a multi-phased epic that comes full circle but the last third, and makes for a gratifyingly danceable backdrop. Searing Light, Forward Motion is a complete 180°; a short but infectious rhythm that goes much harder than anything before it. The second half of this double album, while only slightly, is more ambient than the first, with the clear highlight being the gorgeous ambience and slow build of Into the Arms of Stillness, which I can only describe as the perfect soundtrack for stargazing. Sadly, highlights like this are few and far between, with so many tracks just feeling derivative of more explorative and experimental artists. Darlinnn is an extremely basic song, with nothing of substance to latch onto even as the track builds. Infinite Future has a intriguing, whirring drone underneath, but its lack of a solid melody and a lacklustre ending make its nearly seven minute runtime tedious by its end. Love + Light is not a terrible album, but it has a multitude of missed opportunities and a heavy reliance on mediocre ambience. When it deviates from this formulaic base, the results are stellar, but these points don't come often enough to garner an hour of material.
