Andy Shauf - The Neon Skyline

Andy Shauf manages to drag me into this album despite it being so simple in it's instrumentation, because the guy just manages to be such a likable storyteller. The songwriting here is pretty great all around, with only a few mild slip-ups that I didn't enjoy as much. "The Neon Skyline" is a story album, encompassing the daily life of a citygoer who attends a bar. With each track, you get the general idea of what is going on, and I felt like I was listening to the musical embodiment of a short story that would have been popular in the ragtime era or something of the sort. From the sound, the singing, Andy's silly humor, it all feels very tight and compact. While this album isn't going to be something I bump day in and day out, I will certainly appreciate what Andy has packed together here, as it is distinct, unique, and enjoyable.
