Its like my experience at aoty! jk jk, lets get on with it.
After Aaron Hemphill left the band post "Mess", Angus Andrew became the loan Liar. The wedding dress album covers from TFCF & Titles With The Word Fountain perhaps reflect on the marriage of being in a band, and the breaking up of said "marriage". After the two aforementioned albums were dreamed up alone in the bush, Angus was ready to collaborate again.
Liars is back with a return to form in The Apple Drop. Angus is joined by multi-instrumentalist Cameron Deyell and jazz drummer Laurence Pike, who regularly provide tight grooves. The resulting album draws many late 90's/early 2000's comparisons, but its still a Liars record to be sure. The two singles (Sekwar and Big Appetite) hold up against the bands best work and are very accessible. Things get increasing experimental in the back half of the album, and take more time and effort to unlock (its well worth it though). Angus regularly took mushrooms during the writing and recording periods of this album. Frequently micro-dosing, and other times going all in. You can hear it at times for sure. 10 albums and 20 years in, Liars are still pushing the envelope. Much like a positive trip can provide, Liars feel reborn.
