dearsongs Top 50 albums of the 2010's

I've been pissing around with this as a private list for a long while now, but I've had enough!

I prefer my best of lists to be a "moment in time", while the scores themselves are an ever-evolving thing. So this is my "Top 50 albums of the 2010's", as of Aug 16 2020.

My only "rule" for the list is that I will only pick ONE album per artist.

Check this to get a better idea of what other albums would fit on this list if I didn't use my one album per rule.

Beach House - Teen Dream
Beach House had my favorite output of the decade, dropping 5 good-to-amazing albums, but Teen Dream is easily my favorite.

Zebra, Silver Soul, Used To Be, Real Love & Take Care are all absolute favorite songs of mine.
Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire for No Witness
My Woman is sooo close to this (and more accessible), but Burn Your Fire ruled my life in the mid 2010's.
Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear
First I hated FJM, then I had a hard man-crush on him. I love Pure Comedy, and all the other albums he dropped this decade. Still though ILYH is my definitely favorite from him, even if I always skip "True Affection". I love the other 10 tracks though and he's an all time fav for sure.
Arcade Fire - Reflektor
I'm probably one of the few who prefer Reflektor to the burbs. I went back and forth on this one a lot, but that stretch of longer songs on disk 2 bring if over the finish line for me. I know AF are passé as this point, but I still love this band and think they have put out 4 amazing albums and one moderate misfire.
Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city
This is a classic rap album. While I can respect TPAB for its inventive sound, I think GKMC takes the classic rap album template and does it perfectly. Kendrick Lamar is a special talent. This might be my favorite rap of all time, with only Outkast rivaling it.
Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest
An indie classic. A album with great variety and several amazing tunes. Never gets old.
Woods - At Echo Lake
Completely underrated, but I'll gladly keep it for myself. A freak-folk masterpiece from this amazingly consistent and hardworking band.
Aldous Harding - Designer
My fav album from the past couple of years. I also love Party even if it was more of a difficult listen. Love love love her videos, lyrics, hats, melodies. Gimme more Aldous.
Weyes Blood - Front Row Seat to Earth
Titanic Rising is excellent, but I prefer the songs on this album (even if it doesn't sound as cleanly produced). Her and Aldous are two of my current favs who I am eagerly awaiting more from.
Crystal Stilts - In Love With Oblivion
This, along with the Radiant Door EP which was released the same year, are absolute essentials (Bradford Cox agrees). Fuzzy garage rock has always done it for me. These guys were really great live, even if the singer seemed like he wasn't even in the room with the rest of us. Still get down to this album plus the earlier work from this band.
Mac DeMarco - Salad Days
2 probably has my favorite Mac tracks, but this album is his most consistent. Such an easy listen and has just enough variety to make it something special. I also have a lot of good memories around this album as this came out the year I got married.
Kanye West - Yeezus
Hard to talk about this guy right now but I'll just focus on the music. This and Life of Pablo are a coin flip for me. MBDTF has some AMAZING songs, but imo it also has more fat then Yeezus or LOP. Kids See Ghosts is also good but I'd put that behind the three albums mentioned already. If I made this list at the half way point of the past decade I think Yeezus would have been in my top 2-3. Watching him do black skinhead and New Slaves on SNL was a revelation. Miss that Kanye.
U.S. Girls - In a Poem Unlimited
Another one of my recent favorites, this damn good album is packed with excellent songs and groves. It’s been very interesting to see how Meg Remy has grown from album to album, but this has been the best thus far.
Mitski - Puberty 2
I never expected I would get so into this album, but I still listen to it on a fairly regular basis. There are the obviously great songs, but then tracks like "I Bet On Losing Dogs" "Thursday Girl" & "Once More to See You" hit me like a ton of bricks. Great album.
Richard Dawson - Peasant
Didn't know what to make of this album when I first heard it. I always like Ogre, but the rest took a while. Now it is definitely one of my favorite things. The more fast tempos songs are great, and the slower ones have the melodies to keep you invested. "Masseuse" is an experience of a closer. This album has some of the most gorgeous melodies.
Protomartyr - Relatives in Descent
One of the most important albums of the decade. There are a few songs I don't love, but my favorites I love as much as anything. As good an opener and closer as you can get.
Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains
I was so excited about this. David with woods as his backing band. Then a few short nights before they were to tour this album and David checks out. Its hard to listen to these songs now, even if its easy to realize how special they are.
Julia Holter - Have You in My Wilderness
Its not that I don't like "Vasquez", its just that I think the other 9 tracks are perfect. Such a beautiful album.
Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost
A band that burned bright for a short while. While I slightly prefer Album, this sophomore effort stands just as tall. A band that sounded like so many other classics, yet still always sounded like Girls.
