Call me basic, but this deserves being one of the most legendary blues compilations ever. The title track is up there with The Thrill Is Gone for one of the most iconic blues songs of all time, and yeah it earns its place. Blues does a little with a lot, and its in subtle songwriting differences that a lot of blues rock is set apart, and this album probably has some of my favourite across the genre
This is like the quintessential nu metal album- a shitty white boy rapper over some of the best riffs and rawest production in the genre. It's so full of charm and personality it almost forgives the bad writing that plagues the middle. Almost.
The first four real song run is elite I was blown away
It hasn't aged too well (they kinda lost their minds in the second half) but trust me if I was alive in 1987 I would invent albumoftheyear to give this a 100
If the question behind Bleed the Future was "just how fast can we be?" it feels like the question behind this album was "now that we're here, how do we make it into actual music?"
The result is a bit mixed; the mixing is poor in parts, I still can't stand the rapped vocals, but the instrumentals are more digestible and, well, musical. Contrast is the key to maintaining intensity, and while the music isn't that intense (that comes down to a lot of ... read more
Just incredible riff after incredible riff in a concise, heavy, 30 minute package, starting and ending with two of the best songs in its genre
The first song the quiet and loud moments felt very disjointed, like it wasn't a build up it was just two contrasting sounds put next to eachother, the drastically different production styles for each part reinforcing this- while they were both good in their own right the cohesion as a song was underwhelming.
Track 2 fixes this thankfully. The quiet moments are definitely the best in either song, but I think this second song is some pretty great blackened doom, even if I think the drums ... read more
I feel like Amo is the accumulation of all the learning from their mistakes they've done over the years; their weird electronics on Suicide Season that didn't really work, refined on There is a Hell and Sempiternal but just without good enough production to make them pop, now here in full effect. Their weird pop-metal ideas on Sempiternal that didn't quite play out due to this faux-intensity, now softened for some pop rock bangers, and their lacklustre first attempt at pop rock ... read more
I have a predisposition against goth rock vocals, I hate them, I think they're overly edgy and cringey.
But like Type O Negative I can handle, because their writing isn't fucking DOGSHIT
Not like the instrumentals are amazing, but everytime they'd have something good going musically, I'd be pulled out of it by some of the worst sub-ronne radke writing I've ever been subject to.
I feel like with an album like this (one single song at a length of 83 minutes) you need to feel like your time is being respected. In Mirror Reaper, the length feels more like a marketing gimmick. It doesn't build or escalate in any real or meaningful way, people describe this as an incredibly heavy doom metal album and I just fail to see it, moments of true heaviness are fleeting to say the least, a few chords and then back to the ambience.
That being said, this album, in spite of its ... read more
If I wasn't such a manly man I would've cried
Pretentious progressive wankery has never been my thing in metal, especially when it goes on too long. Even a band I love like TOOL have a habit of their albums running a bit long (lateralus for example leaves me a bit cold after it peaks halfway through with Parabola).
Djent for a similar reason has also left me cold- on top of being the home of modern-day pretentious wankery, it also sounds robotic, repetitive and cold.
This is except for Meshuggah, who really REALLY impressed me with ... read more
I remember a time period around 4-5 years ago when Yungblud was irredeemable fake emo slop on the same level as mgk. I'm not gonna say this album is good, but he's really come a long way on all fronts, I was very surprised to check in on him and find his music was actually pretty decent
I love the yearly leaderboards at the start of the year because you always find weird furry shit like this and it's basically always fire
