The Last Dinner Party - From the Pyre
60

Neither as original or enjoyable as the first album.

The only standout tracks out tracks for me were Second Best and The Scythe. I can see why some people (Ian) like this but there wasn’t that much variety in the tracks. Every song was about the same three things: being a woman, sex, and breaking up. I’ve heard enough of those things in the first album.

Plus there wasn’t no song as good as Sinner on this one.

Maria Taylor - Story's End
60

I was pleasantly surprised by this album!

I came because of the Conor Oberst feature but I stayed for Taylor’s soothing voice and whimsical lyricism. This makes me want to go back and listen to Azure Ray!

Arlo Parks - Ambiguous Desire

While not usually my genre, this bedroom pop album really stuck with me.

I’ve loosely followed Arlo Parks throughout her career and I hope she gets the recognition she deserves for this album. Every track felt sad and also sweet with a lovelorn theme throughout the album.

U2 - Easter Lily EP

2nd surprise drop this year! When are we getting the album???

Honestly, I liked Days of Ash better. This one did really let The Edge cook on guitar and vocals, I hope they continue for the album too! The arpeggiated guitars are reminiscent of Joshua Tree but there is a modern flair to it as well. While still too preachy, Bono does try some new things as well, especially on the final track with is Lou Reed impression. That was going to be my favorite track until he got auto-tuned and then it ... read more

José González - Against The Dying of The Light

A nice chill album with nothing really new to say.

I do love when he switches from singing in English to Spanish to Swedish

The Last Dinner Party - Prelude to Ecstasy
75

Was recommended this by a friend who doesn’t like Mumford and Sons which doesn’t make sense.

Apparently I had listened to it before because I had favorited some of the songs already, but the rest of the album was kind of forgettable. I really liked On Your Side, Sinner, and Nothing Matters. Those songs have the perfect blend of strings, crazy good guitars, and 80’s rock vocals (à la Kate Bush). The themes of modern day feminism and weaved throughout the album as ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
75

Was recommended this by a friend.

Having heard very few BC,NR songs I was pleasantly surprised! I enjoyed the jazz/folk/rock genre bending and the unique elements in each song. I’m not sure I would listen to any of these songs individually because they’re long, but the album was very cohesive and pleasing to my audio receptors.

Morgan Nagler - I’ve Got Nothing To Lose, and I’m Losing It
70

I love albums that blend the line between folk and alt rock.

Morgan Nagler certainly has a future ahead of her, her lyrics are so visceral and the instrumentation deftly switches from simple strums to complex chords.

I especially loved ‘Hurt’ and ‘Hammer and Nail’ with a special shoutout to ‘Dad’s on Acid’ because it’s hilarious!

Matt Berninger - Get Sunk
70

I didn’t like it the first time through but it’s grown on me. So sad but also wonderful. His voice and lyrics are so unique, I can’t wait to see him tonight!

Matt Berninger - Serpentine Prison
75

I knew of the National before and had listened to some of this album right when it came out but it wasn’t until a car trip through the mountains that I listened to this wholly just because it was the only thing downloaded on my phone.

Still holds up! Even the deep cuts are so lyrically beautiful! I do miss the bros though

Various Artists - HELP(2)

A great compilation album that varies between too preachy and completely off topic. The first few songs are star-studded pop songs while the second half are protest songs that are a little too in your face (I’m looking at you universal soldier). There are also some strange covers sprinkled in there.

While I have some issues with it, there is no arguing that there are many good songs on here and the variety kept me engaged. Cameron Winter’s Warning is the standout track for me. ... read more

Ratboys - Singin' To An Empty Chair
75

Probably my favorite album of the year so far!

They’re from Chicago so I had to give them a listen but I realized that I had actually heard them open for Guster 4 years ago! They sound somewhere in between Waxahatchee and Wilco, country but not country. I instantly sent this album to my dad without even finishing the album because I had to spread the word of this miraculous album!

Dijon - Baby
95

One of my favorite albums from last year!

He was praised by so many other musicians that I had to check him out. But it wasn’t until his SNL performance that o got around to it. His performances there were electric and having Bon Iver show up in the background is such a baller move. I’m currently obsessed with Yamaha and My Man but I really like all of the tracks! There are so many layers in the production of this album that I discover something new every listen!

Dijon - Absolutely

I didn’t get this album on my first listen last year, but my second time through was revelatory! I noticed so many nuances and little gags throughout the album that made it ever more enjoyable while also being kinda uncomfortable at times. Many Times and The Dress are instant classics and the rest of the album also rocks!

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
80

A pretty good album!!

I can’t believe I’ve never heard Melancholy Hill before, it’s such a banger!

Gorillaz - The Mountain
65

I liked this more than I thought!

All of the songs had a cohesive theme but each was unique and had its own hook. Every song had so many elements that are impossible to interpret on a first listen but I will say I enjoyed The Happy Dictator and Orange County the most because of their strong emphasis on vocals and traditional instruments. I do love me some sitar!

Mitski - Nothing's About to Happen to Me
65

I like Mitski-rock!

There are glimpses of her previous album throughout this one, but then there are songs that sound like a completely different artist! I enjoyed I’ll Change For You, The White Cat, and Lightning, but my favorite was the opener, In a Lake. The lyrics were so relatable and both melancholy and hopeful at the same time!

Consider my expectations exceeded.

Iron & Wine - Hen's Teeth
55

I usually get bored when I listen to a full Iron and Wine album but this one kept me somewhat entertained. Robin’s Egg and In Your Ocean are the standout tracks but all of the others fade into the background. There is no doubt about Adam Beam’s songwriting or music crafting abilities, there’s just nowhere to go from there.

Gelli Haha - Switcheroo
50

I was recommended this by a friend knowing that this wasn’t really my thing but I have it a try anyway. It was not what I expected.

While I didn’t hate it, I still wasn’t that into it. All of the songs felt like party anthems, to me a good album needs to have some variation. While this is a little too happy for me, I appreciate that is doesn’t take itself too seriously.

A$AP Rocky - Don't Be Dumb
70

I liked this more than I thought I would!

I was intrigued from his performance on SNL, but just got around to listening to this. I’m not a huge rap fan, but this album wasn’t merely a rap record. It has some rock n roll and soul influences as well. I really liked PUNK ROCKY and STAY HERE 4 LIFE because the instrumentals and vocals worked so well together. All in all a pretty good album!
