Has everything I look for in a pop record: killer singles, no filler, great and well executed ideas, well-paced and with an incredibly lively production. honestly, I see no flaws here and might be my favourite pop record
These jazz legends breathe music. Not knowing much about music theory, a lot of groundbreaking jazz records sound like one big entity playing everything at once. A sparkling saxophone on the left, some spastic keys on the right, simple rhythms tying everything together. Scary how natural this comes out in a jazz session for people like Sun Ra, Pharoah, Coltrane, Miles, etc., etc.,etc...
Some of my favourite art is made of opposites. Black and white coexisting in the same notes. Day and night. Up and down. This is exactly what i get from this record. How can such minimalistic pieces feel so impenetrable at times? And other times so welcoming and reachable? This is an ever-changing record, at least for me. Imagine blind-buying this in '91. Like, seriously. Record store nerd, looking for new stuff. You grab this black-and-white LP with four heads reaching above water. Remember this album had NO publicity, which is amazing. People would find the album ocasionally and just bring it home due to the curiosity caused by the album cover.
