Lil Baby - My Turn

Although you can't rely on the first listening and give it a bit of time, My Turn is an album that leaves me with a bit of a bitter taste.

But I had high hopes for this new project, which I thought was going to be a good one, being a good fan of the rapper, but in the end it's a bit of a frustration. Lil Baby had demonstrated on Harder Than Ever all his raw power by really installing his universe (this is my favourite project) and he had refined his previous work and his formula by proposing a more "sophisticated" content and more successful on the mixtape Street Gossip, so I expected this first "real" album to take it to a higher level. Especially since it had left more than one year without a project, which represents about 5 years in the Atlanta time zone, with their uninterrupted productivity. Despite this, My Turn is far too long and contains far too many forgettable or passable songs, which represents almost half of the album when you add it all up.

I would say to begin with that My Turn still looks too much like a mixtape format in its conception, with a multitudes of tracks, where the transition work is quite non-existent. I'm well aware that Lil Baby is a freestyle rapper, it's in this field that he's been able to break through, but he still has this annoying habit of not building real songs or when he knows how to do it, he applies the same formula that he's been applying since 2017, like Whoa which is just a good Lil Baby guy when you think about it. That's what explains the redundant and generic side of his music. So it's true that he tries to try new things, especially on the first part of the album which is for me much better than the second, but it's still far from my expectations.

So it's not all black, because there are still in my opinion about ten pleasant songs, like for example Grace who is my favourite here. Unfortunate observation, but it's generally when he's accompanied by a guest that he gets the best out of himself and this avoids a certain redundancy. I rather like the featurings here. He also knew how to pay tribute to his influences by inviting Lil Wayne and DJ Paul [who produces a beat] (who are the most distant influences) and then Young Thug, Future and Lil Uzi Vert more recently. Luckily the project is enhanced by a really solid and up to date production
