Top 100 albums of 2020 by DoubleZ

Here is my top 100 best albums of 2020. A year marked by few innovations and above all by a lot of versatility. We also notice a large number of albums of an equivalent level. Feel free to say what you think of my list. Of course it is based on my opinion with the greatest possible objectivity. Love

Edit (2021) I have done a rework in order to refine my more severe grading system introduced since the beginning of the year 2021

Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters
1.
88
"If I had to describe Fetch the Bolt crudely, I'd say it's a masterpiece that sounds timeless.Combining perfectly the winning combo in my opinion, a high level of instrumentalization, a splendid interpretation/writing and finally the fact that you will always be pleasantly surprised, has such points that you will ask yourself that she slows down, in order to have time to digest"

Perfume Genius - Set My Heart on Fire Immediately
2.
86
"Set My Heart on Fire Immediately has the appearance of a sober record, especially if you look at its cover, in reality it's perhaps his most emotional and profound album to date. God knows that he had already got us used to setting the bar very high"

My Full review : https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/218227-set-my-heart-on-fire-immediately/
青葉市子 [Ichiko Aoba] - アダンの風 (Windswept Adan)
3.
85
"Winderwept Adan appeals to all our 5 senses in a metaphorical way. The hearing and the taste to realize that this charming and bewitching masterpiece is simply delicious to browse through. The sight and smell that will allow you to visit each room of this adventure thanks to your imagination, multiple images and memories that run deep inside you. The touch in order to enjoy all the emotions that emerge, which will come to embrace you, pinch you when necessary, to realize how much you will change after the Winderwept Adan experience"

Yves Tumor - Heaven To A Tortured Mind
4.
84
"What can I say? That's insane !! Heaven To A Tortured Mind is a veritable explosion of flavours and colours, which instead of blinding you, transports you into the meanders of Yves Tumor's deviant universe"

My Full review : https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/216268-heaven-to-a-tortured-mind/
Playboi Carti - Whole Lotta Red
5.
84
« Whole Lotta Red has everything to sound like a potential significant act that could turn Hip Hop upside down, maybe even more than Playboi Carti has achieved so far. A creative and fun experience that hasn't finished pushing the limits of the possible. It's simply a joy for the listener looking for new thrills »

Ulcerate - Stare Into Death And Be Still
6.
84
" Stare Into Death And Be Still is a real earthquake in the truest sense of the word, but also synonymous with a new air that opens up to Death Metal. To best describe this album, you have to imagine, huge violent explosions that reduce planet earth to nothingness"

My Full review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/220546-stare-into-death-and-be-still/
Charli XCX - how i'm feeling now
7.
83
"Isolated, Charli offers us a fantastic and particularly energetic new project, which not only displays the inexhaustible talent she has, but also continues her crazy race for innovation"

My Full Review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/230412-how-im-feeling-now/
Moses Sumney - græ
8.
83
"Not only is Moses Sumney an extraordinary artist with an incredibly fantastic voice, but on top of that he managed to offer such an exciting and touching opening part that offers a truly hypnotic and mesmerizing listening experience"

My Full review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/192026-grae/
Paysage d'Hiver - Im Wald
9.
83
"The atmospheric Metal of Tobias Möckl has always demonstrated something unique, Im Wald is a new consecration that does not limit itself only to match what he has done in the past, it shows that Winter Landscape is gaining in territory"
Klô Pelgag - Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs
10.
83
"Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs is a treasure that has the gift of transporting you to an unknown universe. The poetry and instrumentation of this masterpiece makes me tremble with each listening, as if I were in the skin of Klo Pelgag"
The Microphones - Microphones in 2020
11.
83
"Spiritually and in retrospect, Phil Elvrum has written a kind of autobiography through Microphones in 2020. A grandiose work, particularly intense, introspective and intimate, which remains forever one of the most beautiful demonstrations of life"

My Full Review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/253159-microphones-in-2020/
Mac Miller - Circles
12.
83
"Circles on a loop, I'm not used to reviewing posthumous albums, especially since most of them are rather bad and/or badly exploited, however Circles is one of the rare albums to make an exception. Honestly I was bluffed by this album (and I've been a big Mac fan since Kids) which is clearly for me his best "project" since his mixtape Faces and may be narrowly his best album in my opinion with WMWTSO, but for now it's still too early, time will decide"

My Full review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/205582-circles/
Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
13.
83
"Like an open book, Punisher is one of this year's sincerest albums, deliberately breaking the codes of intimacy and not afraid to display its fears and questions. It is a totally immersive journey in the company of the prodigious Phoebe Bridgers"

my Full Review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/231192-punisher/
Róisín Murphy - Róisín Machine
14.
83
"With Roisin Machine, the adjective "addiction" has never been more appropriate, it drips with bewitching energy and contagious melodies against a background of intense nostalgia. This new album is a phenomenal demonstration of the genius of Murphy's Queen of the Night, who at the age of 47 just gave herself her most brilliant work, and it was anything but easy given her remarkable discography"

my Full Review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/266103-roisin-machine/
Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure?
15.
83
"Incredibly hypnotic, incredibly groovy, What's Your Pleasure is a radiant work that cannot leave you indifferent. It sticks perfectly in the air of the time, combining beautiful writing with a dancing mood"

My Full review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/218956-whats-your-pleasure/
21 Savage & Metro Boomin - Savage Mode II
16.
82
"Savage Mode 2 is not as intense and morbid as its predecessor, but it manages perfectly to correct some of the flaws of the past while offering a suite with memorable and much more solid content"

My Full review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/285695-savage-mode-ii/
Honey Harper - Starmaker
17.
82
"Starmaker is the kind of dream you would like to revisit every night, because in addition to being a real surprise, it is of such fascinating beauty and emotion"

My Full Review:https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/192952-starmaker/
Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist - Alfredo
18.
82
"Alfredo is a gift from heaven. A work that plunges you into a dark and foggy universe, while remaining irresistibly endearing and comfortable"

My Full Review:https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/246426-alfredo/
Protomartyr - Ultimate Success Today
19.
82
"This year, Protomartyr wins the punk competition with a brilliant Ultimate Success Today. It's also a new lesson in how the band continues to create its legacy"
Run the Jewels - RTJ4
20.
82
"At this painful hour that the United States is going through, which finally touches all the sensible and respectable men of the world, there was nothing better than the duo RTJ to make their voices shout"

My Full review : https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/133007-rtj4/
Fleet Foxes - Shore
21.
82
"After an unusual year marked by isolation, Fleet Foxes returns to offer you the perfect escape, reminding you how freedom is priceless. Particularly invigorating, touching and brilliant, Shore redefines what real life can be like, bringing you closer to the essentials"

My Full Review:https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/282758-shore/
clipping. - Visions of Bodies Being Burned
22.
82
"Halloween is fast approaching, impossible to escape, just like today's topic. Almost 1 year to the day, Clipping doesn't just come back with a simple sequel to satisfy its fans, the second installment Visions of Bodies Being Burned is even juicier, terrifying, intense and more immersive than the previous one. A total success that confirms the fact that Clipping continues to build their reference to the Horrorcore pantheon, and even more to create its own legend thanks to this consecration"

My Full Review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/274474-visions-of-bodies-being-burned/
Adrianne Lenker - songs
23.
82
"The leader of Big Thief has managed to make 2020 less boring by offering us an attractive catalog of folk songs. Without forgetting to say that Anything is a priceless marvel."
Fontaines D.C. - A Hero's Death
24.
82
"In the middle of the rush, the dubliners brilliantly managed to come up with another album in a short space of time that was just as punchy but particularly different. If Dogrel staged the scenery and the context, A Hero's Death is a deeper and more sophisticated work on several layers, focusing on something more abstract and mysterious"

My Full Review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/238991-a-heros-death/
Neptunian Maximalism - Éons
25.
82
"A spiritual journey that uses its versatility to offer us all the most intriguing colors possible"
Tame Impala - The Slow Rush
26.
81
"Although Kevin Parker seems to be back from his space trip, he delivers us the most down-to-earth album of Tame Impala, but make no mistake, this new fabulous sound journey, full of enchanting dreams, still shows one hell of a demonstration of genius. Let's be honest, there's not the same innovative difference between The Slow Rush and the previous effort, like the real "hole" that there was between Lonerism and Currents, placing it below for me. This one sounds more like a continuity since it has some recognizable moulds, yet The Slow Rush has a lot more to offer"

My Full Review:https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/186745-the-slow-rush/
Lianne La Havas - Lianne La Havas
28.
81
"With what she showed us on her eponymous album, Lianne La Havas could very well become the queen of Neo-Soul in the coming years."
R.A.P. Ferreira - Purple Moonlight Pages
29.
81
"Milo a.k.a Rap Ferreira has given us the best Jazz Rap and Abstract Hip Hop album of the year. An interesting character and a brilliant poetry, articulated on a radiant instrumentation, Purple Moonlight Pages is a treasure as few exist every year."
The Strokes - The New Abnormal
30.
81
"In all objectivity, there is absolutely nothing avant-garde for me, and nothing new when you think about it, it's simply a more mature and refined version of Strokes that has managed to make a triumphant return, pleasant for our ears and hearts"

My Full Review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/203601-the-new-abnormal/
Shabaka and the Ancestors - We Are Sent Here By History
31.
81
"We Are Sent Here By History is one of the most fascinating jazz albums of the last 5 years"
Laura Marling - Song For Our Daughter
33.
81
"Without departing from the rule, Laura Marling offers us once again a new album which is characterized in the foreground by a particularly fabulous writing, supported by a warm voice and clear-sighted melodies, while the instrumentalization of folk/pop baroque chamber music is a little more discreet"

My Full review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/230158-song-for-our-daughter/
Destroyer - Have We Met
34.
80
"There's something so deep in the Destroyer music that it seems indescribable. Let's be clear, Have We Met isn't their best album, not even in the top 3, but for now it's clearly the best album I've listened to since the beginning of 2020, and I preferred to take a few days to make sure I'd listen to it, but now there's no doubt about it"

My Full review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/185770-have-we-met/
Lionel Marchetti - Planktos
39.
80
It took 5 years for the native of Marseille to record Planktos, a breathtaking avant-garde work, which puts our eardrums and our sensory expression to the test"
HMLTD - West of Eden
40.
80
"One of this year's funniest albums. HMLTD artistically has the positive attitude that any artist should have, while possessing the talent, which is not given to everyone. West of Eden is a dazzling atypical work that takes you on a journey through paths and landscapes that are both delirious and prodigious. They knew how to capture and impregnate all their 70/80/2000 influences to give a new excellent album to the Post Punk style which never stops showing how much it has no limits, by adding electronic sounds and experimentation"

My Full review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/188319-west-of-eden/
Pharoah Sanders - Live in Paris (1975)
41.
80
A whiff of nostalgia for a period of jazz that we particularly miss in our contemporary era."
Gorillaz - Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez
42.
80
With the help of prestigious guests, Gorillaz launched one of the most enjoyable playlists of the year, not forgetting that it contains some really fabulous songs"
The Koreatown Oddity - Little Dominiques Nosebleed
43.
80
"A beautiful discovery that focuses on the definition of life and existence, which revolves around key ideas such as introspection, emotions, family, ideologies, politics, racism and discrimination, death etc... an album full of good surprises."
Jeff Rosenstock - NO DREAM
45.
80
"NO DREAM is a little less brilliant than his previous efforts in my opinion, but all this raw energy and his shattering messages make this new album a real joy"

My full review : https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/243688-no-dream/
King Krule - Man Alive!
46.
80
"Man Alive! is equal in size to his previous albums, and that's a very, very rare fact at the moment! I love that feeling when you listen to a prodigious artist and you know you're going to have a warm, wonderful time where you're going to love discovering what's hiding and then covering it up again and again. There is always something intense and unique about King Krule's music. He transports us into his always very intimate universe, at the same time oppressive and anxiety-provoking, as if we were attracted by something even more powerful than the laws of gravity"

My Full review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/207680-man-alive/
Lil Uzi Vert - Eternal Atake
47.
80
"For me, Eternel Atake was really worth waiting for, because it's a successful album with a funny theme, which can only do good to the Hip Hop genre. It's also a double blow for Lil Uzi Vert who, in addition to making a flamboyant comeback, is back in the lead."

My Full review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doublez/album/142563-eternal-atake/
Deftones - Ohms
48.
80
"A controlled return, where many would have skidded"
Arthur Russell - Roulette Intermedium, New York
49.
80
"One of the most exciting live archives of the year, showing what a majestic artist Arthur Russell was"
Porridge Radio - Every Bad
50.
79
"Throughout the excellent Every Day, Porridge Radio shows that their music is of an overflowing richness that has so much to offer us and is likely to keep you busy for a long time"

Nice list, I'll check some out that I haven't yet. Btw, I really liked the Ichiko Aoba review you did. Keep it up.

11mo
I appreciate @leolucia very much, thank you ! I like your list very much too ! Keep me informed of the albums you've discovered and that you like !

11mo
Thank’s @Inglume
11mo
Also noticed a few albums I haven’t listened to yet that look cool. Glad to see the representation haha
11mo
Great reads on much, much of the records included! Totally agree with a lot said here, even the Strokes album which is probably my favorite this year on here.
11mo
Nice list
11mo
Thank you very much @Jamobo! It's true! In fact, we have a lot of choices in common (:
11mo
Great list! It's always fun to see what overlaps and what doesn't :)
11mo
Thank you @MickOwen it is a great pleasure to hear your words (:

That's exactly right, but at least there are a lot of very good things @jragrazal
11mo
@DoubleZ I agree. While this year has been consistent with releases, I don't feel like there has been an outstanding release, or a game changer outside of just a few
11mo
Great list, always love reading your content :)
11mo
It's really kind, thank you very much my friend (: I agree but the small downside of the year 2020 is that according to me it lacks exceptional albums like the top 1-4 @jragrazal
11mo
This list is stacked. It made me realize how great this year was for music. Loved the picks and your description of each!
11mo
Oups, thank you @elliscool5 (:
11mo
Just a little reminder but you made a typo on Lianne La Havas haha. But still, solid list!
