Car Seat Headrest - Disjecta Membra
90

many reviews on AOTY reduce Disjecta Membra to just the shorter b-sides of Nervous Young Man, but this album shows a side of will that i wish he showed more of beyond the NYM era.

the lyrics in this album are so brutal, you can feel the cold, anti-virtuous, pessimistic, world that will is living (surviving?) through.

some reviews pick at certain songs (namely dream encounter on smoke mountain) for being out-of-place or difficult to listen to, but i think the album is tied together nicely. ... read more

Chappell Roan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess
90

I'm going to throw up and cry all the glitter off my eyelids now

Geordie Greep - The New Sound
90

wow greep... this is quite The New Sound. i'm attracted to how each track is glamorously-grotesque, yet so addictive. with each listen, i discover something new. something is magnetic about this album and greep's work, i can't wait for more.

of Montreal - False Priest
80

"False Priest" is the love child of "Skeletal Lamping" and "Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?"

as with most OM albums, there are a few tracks that stand out in particular. there are good moments scattered throughout, and interesting psych-glam instances. however the overall feeling of the album seems a bit unfocused other than a theme of 'freaky-fantasy'.

(i'm surprised that tracks like godly intersex (65) and enemy gene (69) have low ratings ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
90

this album is so dynamic and heart-wrenching and powerful and HEART-WRENCHING! the contrast between each of the tracks is both beautiful and tragic.

most of my time listening to Ants From Up There has been spent chewing over a specific lyric.... you can find a new lyric to ruminate over with each listen.

Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy (Face to Face)
100

thank you car seat headrest for making good times bad, and bad times worse.

jokes aside:

a no-skip album that pries at your soul. will toledo's storytelling makes me feel like i have lived adjacently to his awkward, once-in-a-lifetime, emotional, experiences. i don't think i have ever been impacted so strongly by another album and musician

Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island
75

On Avery Island is a haunting dizzy-dreamy odyssey that doesn't make any particular sense. some of the tracks melt into each other.

i wanted to avoid being the nth person to diss "pree-sisters swalling a donkey's eye" but i can't listen to this album without skipping it.

Built to Spill - There's Nothing Wrong with Love
85

the music is warm and hugs you when everything feels a bit too hollow... some of the songs are catchy and sweet.

i enjoy "big dipper" and "twin falls".

EDIT 2014-10-09 70 -> 85
i saw built to spill live last month in NYC. i hold this album closely to my heart and my perspective has changed... travelling and sharing time with my most dearest friends will forever be marked by built to spill.

this album was wonderful live, and showed me a new side to built to ... read more

100

oh kevin barnes... your lecherous and lustful lyrics sing so brightly to me...this album is FREAKY.

i find it somewhat humorous when "and i've seen a bloody shadow" starts playing... its a breath of fresh air before we jump back into the sexy and eccentric "plastis wafer"

many of the songs are quite catchy, however you can only hum along...

EDIT: 2024-10-09 this album GLOWS with lust and i continue to listen to it almost daily. changing my rating from 85 -> 100

Grimes - Visions
80

an equally enlightening and ethereal album!!! this album was my introduction to grimes, and frames a point of struggle in my life. i could lay in bed with my headphones on and shut my eyes; truly feel the music and nothing else around me.
a couple of the tracks are inconsistent with the energy of the album, although the trance that visions provides makes it impossible to skip.

Car Seat Headrest - Monomania
85

"I didn’t like you anyways
You always spoke so quiet
I had to ask you to repeat yourself"

Monomania captures what it means to love-hate-love-hate someone. this album is an emotional sunburn. will's bitterness and madness is unlike anything he revealed in the album's predecessor...

"Souls," the antonym to "Bodys" describes the torment of overthinking. unlike "Bodys", will is not experiencing the same reckless joy that he would hope to get ... read more

of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
90

an existentialist storybook takes the form of a psychedelic pop record! as i continue to trek through the OM discography, "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?" remains as my favourite album.

the progression from "Heimsdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse" -> "Gronlandic Edit" -> "A Sentence Of Sorts In Kongsvinger" met with the soul-shattering scrutiny of "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal" is so absorbing. i could sit there and loop those ... read more

of Montreal - The Sunlandic Twins
80

the sunlandic twins marks a period of growth and high frequency in two different times in my life. i was first introduced to "Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games" in 2018. only recently i explored the album in full; i never knew how much i needed happy, sing-songy, bright music. of Montreal tells a nonsensical story that sounds like an optimistic summer day...flowery language aside, this album is meaningful and will put you in a good mood even in the worst of times.
