Hyolyn - SAY MY NAME

How did Hyolyn manage to make a decent EP in 2020 with singles from 2018? No idea - But hey, it quite worked. "SAY MY NAME" holds much from the artist's times as a vocalist in the girl group SISTAR. "Morning Call" fits her very well, and "9LIVES" is so far one of my favorite k-pop tracks of the year. Oh, well.
ITZY - Not Shy

It must hurt struggling so much to keep a defined artist persona. While ITZY was expected to mainly aim at the experimental route past artists like miss A and f(x) would swin by every day, even while being a more mainstream k-pop group - but "Not Shy", their most recent EP, is just an awful hill to die on. From the completely out of place title track to cliché songs like "SURF" and "Be In Love", I doubt JYP Entertainment has true plans outside their pockets ... read more
HIGH4 - Blessed

For my own demise, HIGH4's "Blessed" is boring from the bottom to the top. A generic collage of R&B/dance-pop/pop rap in a really cheap EP. What an awful way to end a career (like, literally, they disbanded after.

Not many groups in the k-pop industry directly risk themselves in the R&B route. EXO's artists go all-out in their solo albums, but never as an unit. HIGH4 is not exactly a pioneer, but definitely got a new kind of debut album with "HIGH4 1st Mini Album ‘HI HIGH’". Also, the collaboration with Lim Kim is really smooth. A nice release to listen sometimes.
Miley Cyrus - Breakout
55
In order to understand Miley Cyrus' exotic personality complex in music, it's important to look through her discography from each era. In "Breakout", we see a star being born - or manufactured.

Those who got shocked with "Younger Now" probably had no memory of "Breakout", a pop rock/country fusion aimed at teenagers. The album travels between different mixes of what seems to be the same exact track, from the title track "Breakout" to a Alabama-ish cover ... read more
