Genesis - Foxtrot
95

Truly blown away by the sheer depth and scope of the ambitious prog rock here. The soundscape of this album is super enveloping, and every song paints such a diverse picture. I'd honestly say Supper's Ready could maybe be one of the best songs ever

Snail Mail - Lush
67

Resonant lyrics and very pretty instrumentals, but it lacks much of an identity outside of that

Edit: as further proof of this: I literally fully forgot that I listened to this

75

Solid enough, in my opinion. Gunn's voice does get a little grating for me, along with his signature gun sounds and "ayo" every 5 seconds, but the production is great, the features are all very solid, and the lyrics are pretty serviceable

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
90

So damn tightly constructed. Each song flows from one to another without any dips in quality. The rhyming is amazing, and the jazz instrumentals are so timeless. Definitely some of the best jazz rap I've ever heard

Childish Gambino - "Awaken, My Love!"
69

I can respect that Gambino wanted to try going in a different direction, but I don't think it really worked super well here. It's soul music, but I didn't find it be super compelling outside of a couple tracks. Most of the songs tended to meander along, and I grew bored of them fairly quickly. There were some standouts for me, don't get me wrong. I really enjoyed songs like Me And Your Mama and Redbone, and I thought the overall tone of the album was neat, but it Just didn't wow me like it ... read more

Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence
75

Definitely an improvement from Born to Die, if not a huge one. Pretty engaging throughout, with really nice instrumentation on most of the songs. Lana does tend to still feel a little one-note as an artist to me, but the style is well enough done to keep it interesting enough

Madvillain - Madvillainy
88

I mean c'mon, it's Madvillainy. Madlib Truly just woke up and chose to make some of the best, most unique and groundbreaking hip hop beats I've ever heard. I honestly think that not too many other rappers could have fully taken advantage of the production, but Doom is a perfect fit, coming in with some really amazing wordplay. Doom's flow tends to sometimes fall a little flat for me, but this Album really mitigates that problem for me. As an extra little bonus, I don't ... read more

Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon: The End Of Day
89

I probably shouldn't have liked this as much as I did, but I really did. The music loops tend to probably land a bit repetitive, but them and the vocals are just so catchy. It's really more of an art pop album than it is a hip hop one, but the songs are just so catchy and full of SO much energy. MotM is a concept album, but the concept isn't really a major factor towards me in either direction

Death Grips - Government Plates
74

I actually really like some of the more phrenetic elements on here, but the songs tend to drone on a bit past the point of repetition in some parts

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
80

Two absolute BANGERS of new wave dance tracks, but the album took a bit of an unexpected change in direction with some lower key songs which were still pretty good, but not what I was expecting. The more overt rock-inspired elements bleeding into the Ravey, Dance-Punk sound was a nice addition

Charli xcx - how i'm feeling now
80

Way more experimental than I expected for a pretty mainstream artist like Charli XCX. Music was truly in a wack place when this album came out

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
91

The music is just SO intricate and the vocals are great. I get why it may be a bit divisive, but I'm a big fan of the soft-rock sound. Obligatorily, I have to point out how great the story behind the album is, but I don't even think it needs that for it to be good. I do think Songbird is boring, though

twenty one pilots - Trench
83

I wish I was emo in the mid 2010's, because this is the kind of stuff I'd be on. Knowing nothing about the story or lore or whatever going into this album, I still gained so much from the amazing and detailed synth-pop

Armand Hammer - We Buy Diabetic Test Strips
81

In my opinion, this style of production is much better suited to this vibe of experimental hip-hop than The Alchemists. That JPEGMAFIA feeling courtesy of... JPEGMAFIA really works on a lot of the tracks, giving a lot of depth to music that, honestly, probably wouldn't be that good without it. There's some really great lyrics on here, but it felt like a bit of a sideline to how the album sounds. Luckily, this sound is very good

Danny Brown - XXX
86

Didn't find XXX to be as much of a stand-out experimental statement piece like Atrocity Exhibition, but it's still got more than enough going for it to make it a worthwhile listen.

The beats kill, as does the off-kilter delivery style. No one can be Danny like Danny is Danny

MF DOOM - MM..FOOD
86

He truly put his whole Metallic Doomussy into the production here. I understand the complaints with the cartoon samples, but I found them charming enough the first time around and I just skip em' whenever I get to them. Should that make an album worse if I skip about half of it? maybe. This album could EASILY be in the 90's for me with less of em, but the songs are just way too good to rate any lower

79

Whatever you do, DO NOT LOOK AT THE COVER. Scarred for life.

King Geedorah - Take Me to Your Leader
79

Really like a lot of the beats and general production on here, and the rapping is the quality you're gonna expect from Doom. The whole theme didn't really click with me, though. I couldn't tell if all the samples about the government and monsters or something were trying to create an overarching story or if they were just for fun, but that isn't going to ruin a whole album for me. You kind of just accept that kinda stuff with Doom at a certain point
