ROME - A Passage to Rhodesia
59

Jérôme Reuter, the Luxembourger behind ROME, dedicated a double album to a racial state that lasted a mere fourteen years before being buried by its own illegitimacy. A Passage to Rhodesia is musically competent, artistically ambiguous, and politically slippery.
The structure is clever: the first disc is acoustic neofolk with symphonic arrangements and martial percussion, warm as a hotel room overlooking the savanna; the second, House of Stone, descends into industrial ambient ... read more

I dozed off listening and dreamed I was in the cover art room and had been stabbed with a screwdriver. I remained strangely calm, gazing at the lights of the buildings.

Excerpt from David Toop’s Ocean of Sound:

1967, The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm, London.
Waiting at the head of the queue late in the evening, then almost first into the building — an emptied, circular shell once used for turning steam engines. The interior has the dark, soaring atmosphere of a ruined abbey; an abandoned factory of shadowed, grim corners and filthy alcoves. Lights are being rigged from the roof of a small hut in the centre of the floor. On stage, men are aimlessly busy, ... read more

"To circumscribe music within the pursuit of beauty is to amputate a considerable portion of its expressive range. For these reasons, I would argue that music is any form of sound intentionally organized for artistic expression."
On EarCandy's review of AMM - AMMMusic
"Despite the absence of traditional instrumentation or voice, these works convey emotional density and narrative suggestion; they are, in every meaningful sense, musical. My second reservation concerns the requirement that music must “produce beauty.” This strikes me as an ingenuously reductive view of what music is capable of achieving. Countless albums are conceived precisely to reveal what is harsh, grotesque or disquieting in the human condition. They resist the conventions of harmony, symmetry or aesthetic pleasure, not because they fail to be music, but because their artistic purpose lies elsewhere: in confronting the listener with anxiety, abrasion, despair or collapse. ..."

"Do you, personally, agree with this Oxford definition? I find myself at odds with two of its central premises: the limitation to “vocal or instrumental” sounds and the expectation “to produce beauty.” The first issue arises because there is a substantial corpus of works constructed entirely without vocals or instruments, and yet they are undeniably,at least to me,music. Many field-recording albums contain neither of these elements, and still they embody deliberate artistic intention. One may organize the natural cadence of trains arriving and receding, as in Chris Watson’s El Tren Fantasma, or the submerged acoustic world of marine life captured in Jana Winderen’s projects..."
