Pinned Review

The new age Prince comes back with a fresh album that expands his funky soul sound. While I think the songs on Apollo XI were more vibrant and immediate, Gemini rights is still a pretty fun rack of blissful late afternoon summer jams.

Stylistically akin to a Jpegmafia record, there's a lot to appreciate here. Be it the witty political commentary or the eclectic production, the hype is definitely justified. However, some fine-tuning would help future releases since there's a noticeable wall between appreciation and enjoyment as I dig deeper. The vast breadth of samples, beat breakdowns, sudden bursts of energy makes for an engaging listen but the experience could be even more immersive.

I must admit my soft spot for this album... A boogie didn’t reinvent the wheel but his contagious melodies and easy-going flows are so enjoyable here. The hazy trap production is mostly generic and the lyrics aren't that memorable but I think this is one of the better records that the 2010's melodic rap wave had to offer. There's some gold gems in this bloated tracklist.
 - RENAISSANCE

Renaissance serves as an ode to a clubbing era where anyone who felt like an outsider sought out and formed a community to creatively express themselves through the sounds we celebrate today. It's a hook ridden masterwork with chart-topping production that would disintegrate as bland pastiche in the hands of a weak performer, but beyonce turns it into something sensuously urgent with her ecstatic charisma.

TO EVERYONE AROUND MY AGE (GEN Z) SAYING 2PAC IS OVERRATED: It's largely because you're listening to him from the perspective of someone whose entire life has been spent listening to rappers that were heavily influenced by his music. That's why you have TPAB at 100 and you think Pac's music is mediocre. Of course he doesn't sound impressive to you, because you've been immersed in the aftermath of what his music has produced. Please try and dissociate your critique from recency bias.

A somewhat clandestine record housing some of the best dance grooves you'll hear this year. A project that I wasn't anticipating but had to check out when I saw the likes of Sampha, Serpentwithfeet, Little Dragon, and Charlotte Day Wilson all featured on the tracklist. Ended up being a pleasing surprise... The production on this album is evergreen. If you like artists like Kaytranada, Disclosure, etc. , it won't disappoint.
