Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition

Who would have thought that a dude with this zany, erratic-ass voice would produce one of the most introspective and essential statements in 2010’s underground hip hop. On its surface, it doesn’t exactly sound all too worthy of that much introspection - this guy is just screeching over dusty and/or actively antagonistic beats. However, shining through the initial visceral response of shock is a genuinely one-of-a-kind musical trip.

NIKI - Moonchild

This is basically a remarkably scant pop record with one incredible song on it ("Selene"). "Selene" isn't anything mind-blowing or boundary pushing, but it is a fun and captivating pop jam. The bassline and drum groove combined with Niki's sly delivery evolves into an explosion of sound at the end. The vocals and horns are infectiously catchy on this one. Unfortunately, pretty much none of the other tracks compel me all that much - they kind of fall into the background and ... read more
The xx - I See You

I really miss the xx - the beauty in their work is something that I really appreciate. The combination of Jamie xx's minimalist production and the vocalists' hushed and delicate tone creates something really unique that is endearing and warm. Listening to this album again is a nice reminder of their sound, and it feels like a loving embrace from an old friend. I've definitely cooled off a little bit on this album though - even though it's quite charming to listen to, it feels like many of the ... read more
Carly Rae Jepsen - Dedicated

This is a groovier, more minimalistic take on Jepsen’s wholesome pop sound - it feels more laidback and vibier, there aren’t as many massive choruses as Emotion. It mostly highlights her strengths just as well, occasionally falling into pockets of blissful genius (“Now That I Found You” and “Too Much” are among the best in her discography). It’s a fun listen, as are all of the albums in her catalog, but it’s really hard to follow up something as ... read more
Kero Kero Bonito - Time 'n' Place

This is a pretty cool indie pop direction for Kero Kero Bonito to turn in after their debut - has a lot more synths and guitars that do a lot to transform their sound into something completely different. It still feels pretty sweet, and Sarah's vocals feel just as wholesome and inviting. It does kind of feel like a series of just decent indie pop songs that are occasionally broken up by moments of brilliance though. "Only Acting," "Make Believe," and "Swimming" ... read more
Perfume Genius - No Shape

I haven't come back to this all that often since it was initially released, but much of its appeal still holds strong. Mike Hadreas injects a large amount of personality in a relatively whispery and soft timbre. It balances well when there are grand arrangements like on the first two tracks - "Otherside" specifically employs an aural jumpscare with its walls of texture that explode all over it. This beautifully colorful experience is followed up with "Slip Away," whose ... read more

Hi emcee,

At 400 followers, I wanted to end a series of community lists that I've compiled this year as a trilogy. The last two community lists focused on song lyrics (wild and sad). Currently, I wanted to look more on production for the last one. With that being said, I wanted to ask you one simple question: In your opinion, what is the best sounding banger you've ever heard? It can be from any music genre you like.

Have been an avid music listener for quite a while, only now wanting to express some love for it via writing.

Tastes have varied over the years - currently really into mostly indie pop and rock, as well as some hip hop, soul, and jazz.

Will follow back with a follow :)
