Arctic Monkeys - AM

With an even stronger, clearer influence from QOTSA this time around, the monkeys deliver a set of polyphonic rock tunes that explore their poppier inclinations as much as a considerably heavier side as well. Most of the tracks here are, though, quite linear and cyclical, making AM an ultimately tiring album to return to. Not that it is dense or anything, but rather redundant within its own structure. Right from the start, with the manic opening riff of "Do I Wanna Know?", the band unveils a sum of what the listeners will find here: some good instrumental ideas packed up in shiny, glorified containers, played over and over to numbing results. The first half brings in heavier guitars and cockier performances than anything they'd ever done before, and more than once, these groovier tracks actually offer moments of sheer fun - party music for those considering themselves too cool for banging their bodies to some Lady Gaga.

However, Turner and his peers also take attempts at slower, emotional romantic directions, and, yes, as soon as the frontman's ludicrous, overly sexual persona leaves the scene (that same we all love to hate), all personality leaves their music, and the results fall really short. With the exception of "Knee Socks", these slow-burning moments remain unimpressive fillers at best.

While not that terrible an effort as many point it out to be, AM shows the indie-rockers in a rather flat creative state. As exciting as some of their songs can be, the whole thing just screams limitation. Not coincidently, the last few years have seen the band members engaging in different endeavours, seeking other possibilities for their craft. Wether they managed to find that solace or not is entirely up to debate, but, as we look ahead on another Arctic Monkeys release, revisiting their previous material, it seems only but a reasonable state of affairs.
