Deerhunter - Cryptograms

Deerhunter have been a really difficult band to put in a nutshell right from the beginning, with their noise/post-punk origins an experimental influences, but its actually the unexpected indie-rock tendencies in their sound that made it really tough for listeners to understand their artistic identity, or even connect with their music. On Cryptograms, the album that many consider to be their debut, this feeling of obscurity and strangeness had been shown to the world in a most upfront manner, with their constant, track-by-track experimentations and uneven sonority on the tracklisting. It just might be one of their most experimental and intriguing record to date with its intense quasi-krautrock and musique-concrète influences throughout its runtime occasionally confronted by the infectious alternative/indie-rock passages, on tracks such as Cryptograms, Spring Hall Convert or closing-bliss Heatherwood. In fact, this enormous diversity in sounds and textures aligned with the quite cloudy, hidden songwriting-value acts as a double-edged sword, often intriguing the listener with its labyrinth of sound, but also creating a barrier that may be tough to overcome, ultimately.
