There is no grunge without this record, there is no Nirvana without this record, this is one of the most important rock albums of all time. This is all killer no filler and these are some of my favorite songs ever. Kim Deal is one of my favoritye bass players ever and every song on this record is an example of that. God damn I can't praise this enough. Just listen to it.
The competance of this album is its only strength. The 80s production and aesthetic is achieved but only on a surface level, the songwriting gets across the idea of who Tory Lanez's character is on this project but it is incredibly basic, and the clear want to sound like 2010s The Weeknd is so apparent I'm suprised he hasn't been called a ripoff yet (not saying that I am calling that) Also The Color Violet has become too overplayed in my opinion.
This is an incredibly intimate rap album, which is a massive strength of it. I had really only known Vince for Big Fish Theory and his numerous features in which his technical skills are on display. On Dark Times he focuses more on storytelling and I think it pays off tremendously. There is something for everyone on this record, those who just enjoy the slow, jazz influenced beats, or for those who appreciate the vulnerability Vince displays.
The strengths of this album are it's ability to sound like the Beatles without ripping off the Beatles. The clear influence is all over this project but the songwriting is very unique. Due to it being a psych-rock/pop album recorded in the 60s, many will just disregard this as a Beatles clone, but it is an incredibly enjoyable listen to those who see through the obvious comparison.
Every idea attempted was done remarkably well. These are increbly danceable tracks that don't sacrifce good lyrics to achieve that goal. This being my first listen to Charli xcx I really didn't know what to expect but I'm not suprised to find that this is as fun, interesting and enjoyable as people are saying.
Some of his best and most hype songs are on this project, but a bloated tracklist and some really goofy songs keep this at the bottom of his album rankings in my opinion. (If anyone is wondering the objective order is Die Lit, Self-Titled, Whole Lotta Red).
This album is beloved by two people, music nerds and bass players. There is something so fantastic and otherwordly about the atmosphere of this record and it is really something difficult to describe. The spaciousness of a lot of these songs are something that you don't get often. Below the Salt is also an absolutely phenomenal song and is my favorite on the album. You can't really understand what is being said but it really doesn't matter, the goals of this album are achieved sucessfully in my ... read more
It's not bad, but if it weren't for Dave Grohl being the one singing these songs, they would be pretty generic. In addition a lot of nit-picks, weird lyrical choices and Everlong being completely overplayed, this is an album that despite my best efforts, I can't say I love.
It's inoffensively boring. I'm not going to fault anyone for liking this but for me, there isn't much for me to like. There are a few ok songs but those are good because of the production or any particular feature. Lil Baby doesn't add to any of these songs in a really meaningful way. I'm sure a deep dive into the lyrics would provide a more wholelistic experience, but frankly I'm not inclined to because no matter what Lil Baby says, his delivery takes any emoition out of it. At it's best it is ... read more
The sheer fact that a 17 year old could of made this blows my mind. Before he was even an adult he was making timeless boom-bap that we can still look back upon a decade later and appreciate. Survival Tactics may actually be a perfect song and Third Eye Shit is probebly my favorite possie cut of all time. RIP Capital Steez.
I think the appeal of this album to me is how geniune it is. Yachty could of easily just ripped off the stylings of Tame Impala and Pink Floyd and done his normaly rap flow over it. Instead this is a geniunly great psych rock album. There are several ideas that work tremendously and the soundscapes that he is able to exist within make this one of the best and most suprising efforts in the past few years.
The aesthetic of "Dark R&B" was pulled off successfully on this mixtape and I think it works well enough. There are some great ideas on this project and I enjoy the more experimental and patient tracks (like the second half of Loft Music being essentially an ambient track) and the title song is great. However the lyrics try really hard to affirm the dark sex/drug filled parties that this mixtape is really about, which gives way to some pretty corny lyrics. I understand completely ... read more
Very fun indie-rock album. Decent song writing and unexpectedly beautiful composition and vocal harmonies. However there are like 9 skits on this album. I already think 1 skit is too many but 9 is just ridiculous. Besides that, its a fun time.
Shitty Yeat. The bad songs are boring as sin and the good songs are D teir Yeat songs. I don't really care about industry plants but can they at least plant good ones?
I would not consider myself a big jazz guy as the only other jazz album I have listened to is Bitches Brew (which despite being amazing is just babies first free-jazz record) but this is just classic. It's only 32 minutes so no one has an excuse to not listen to it. Its increidbly engaging and isn't just background music.
Baby Keem shows that beyond the Kendrick co-sign he has a lot to offer. This is a unique album in which many people can say it is good but have varying highlights. For me I think my favorites are trademark usa, durag activity and vent. I prefer his leanings into rage rather than rnb. But everyone can say that family ties is a generational classic.
Boring. Nothing really to say beyond that. Bear in mind I listened to this after 7-Minute Drill was removed so I'm not sure how it's inclusion would have effected my enjoyment of it. So after listening to the "J Cole approved" version, all I can say is that it is just boring.
This was a case of "AOTY is saying this is good so I might as well check it out" and I am not dissapointed into what I found. These guys blend jazz elements with unbelievable percussion mixed with poetry that delivered in a way that sounds almost like rap and all of this comes together beautifully. I have also heard good things about their other ep Knocknarea which makes me incredibly excited for their debut LP, whenever they decide to release that. Highly recomend this.
Fully understanding the context behind this is vital in fully appreciating what this album sounds like. It sounds like salvation. The first 7 songs are incredible krautrock that sound good in virtually any setting. I hadn't been familar with Bowie's music outside of his big hits but these are infinetly more layered and textuted. That is absolutly the work of Brian Eno but to say Bowie had no say in the process is just wrong. But then the last 4 songs are this beautiful ambient suite that ... read more
The pipeline from hyperpop to indie rock apparently exists and is awesome. I thought that his EP still-life released earlier this year was ok, but I am happy to say I think this is excellent. These songs have production like that of chronic but due to the instrumentation being a lot more traditional, all of these songs lean into shoegaze which I do really like. This album ends up being appealing to a lot of people and I would recomend it to all of them.
