The Marías - Submarine

85/100

'Submarine' is a great dream-pop album, the second album so far in The Maria's building discography. The album touches on deep themes of longing and despair, both of which are intensely woven throughout intricate instrumentals and lyrics.

I love the intro track, 'Ride', though it does seem to get overlooked. The instrumental is distinct and provides a darker sound that isn't abundant on the album, but gives the album an energetic lift off into ... read more

Slipknot - Slipknot

93/100

This album has been one of my favorites for a long time, introducing me into the exciting and, albeit, outdated world of nu metal. Regardless of how corny the concept of nu metal has turned out to be, this album (and a lot of Slipknot's material) has ages phenomenally.

Joey Jordinson (RIP) is really one of the greatest drummers of all time, no matter what the general opinion of metal may be, and he shows that throughout this entire album. What the guitars may lack in ... read more

John Michel - Egotrip

83/100

I don’t have too much to say about ‘Egotrip’ other than it was a great, artistically crafted album. The album’s biggest weakness is its lack of diversity; every track sounds pretty similar, making some of the tracks difficult to pick apart from each other. However, there are definitely some very catchy songs, namely ‘Don’t Save Me’ and ‘Preacher’, and the beats are all around very well produced.

What this album lacks in diversity ... read more

Magdalena Bay - Mercurial World
89

89/100

Matt and Mica produce an excellent album in ‘Mercurial World’, their first full-length album (I’m really not sure why their first project is not deemed an ‘album’).

My Magdalena Bay journey actually began with ‘Imaginal Disk’, recommended it by AOTY user and long time friend Clay5701. That album changed the way I look at music, so naturally I expected a lot from the album that preceded it. I was not disappointed!

‘Mercurial World’ ... read more

Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk

100/100

Magdalena Bay creates one of the greatest aural experiences ever conjured with ‘Imaginal Disk’. Track for track for track, this album does not miss. There is genuinely not a single second on this album that I think can be improved; even songs that may be a little weaker individually fit so unbelievably perfectly in this album.

Each interlude is placed methodically, blending from the previous song and into the next. That’s probably my favorite thing about ... read more

FKA twigs - EUSEXUA
87

87/100

‘Eusexua’ is like a weird mixture of what ‘Brat’ created with a Grimes-like influence; I’m all for it. It’s difficult to put a finger on what exactly scratches my brain with this project but there are lots of highs on FKA twig’s latest full length release. The title track and opener sets a great tone for the album and segways into a string of bangers, including ‘Girl Feels Good’, ‘Perfect Stranger’, and ‘Room of ... read more

Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel Is Wiser than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More than Ropes Will Ever Do
80

80/100

Sonically, I really don’t find much interesting on this album. It is extremely minimalistic when it comes to the production and (for lack of a less pretentious phrase) avant-garde as far as the instrumentals go.

-but-

The emotion is raw on this album. As someone who favors sonic value to lyrical value, I’m hesitant to consider this a good album. Fiona Apple absolutely rips at every thread in her heart to perform the lyrics that she has put pen to paper for this album, and ... read more

Kanye West - Late Registration
96

96/100

There isn’t a bad song on ‘Late Registration’. Unpopularly, I believe that this is Kanye West’s best album to date, and for good reason.

Like ‘College Dropout’, each skit tells and adds to an ongoing story throughout the album. The messaging is by no means the most profound, but still creative and witty enough to keep me interested.

Kanye shows that he has the bars, the chops, and the musicality to be the best in the game on this project. Songs ... read more

Tyla - TYLA +
83

83/100

Tyla+ is a very consistent album, for better and for worse. Many songs end up sounding extremely similar to each other, but that sound is a great one. The choruses of many songs, like Water, Breathe Me, Priorities, etc, help differentiate the songs enough to not keep them from becoming repetitive. Consistently catchy melodies and infectious beats help this album reach a score of 83 for me, but it’s lack of diversity and sound hold it back from any higher score.
