It's been tough trying to figure out how I feel about this since its release. While shorter than expected, there is a lot of it to consider; though every listen reveals it's a mixed bag.
One consistency that will always remain: seamless segues. And there are some standout tracks as shown in "DNB TING", "SAN DIEGO VIP", and "REDLINE DASH". But these tracks can't overcome the bad ones — and there are far too many.
So of what I enjoy, I really ... read more
Maybe someday I'll warm up to it more. I hope to. His voice caught me so off guard and that alone is a difficult barrier to enjoy this. I do admit the instrumentation is interesting but there's a handful of low points.
Track 2 would have been great had it ended at 2 minutes. The second verse is so noticeably underwritten. Track 3 is fine. Track 5 is pretty bad. Track 7 is the worst. The rest? Take it or leave it. I'll leave it. I'll leave it all.
All in all, I admire ... read more
Admittedly had quite a grip on me in 2014. I was hooked as soon as I came across the album teaser. And after countless listens since its release, it's spent a considerable amount of time with me.
Now and even then, it's insignificant. It's mostly fine but generally boring and overly repetitive. What was enjoyable was only just. Though I will specifically note:
All Is Fair In Love and Brostep > Terror Squad
"Coast Is Clear" was terrible then and it's worse now.
Obnoxious. One moment he's moaning, one moment he's whining like a baby, but for most of the album he sounds like Lil Yachty and Eddie Murphy at the same time. Beat selection becomes a drone. Features are nearly all unnecessary and such poor performances. The rest — yeah I'm not going to go further. I'm done. I'm putting as much energy into this as Carti put into this. Enjoy.
1. Popping out with a terrible vocal inflection.
2. Snooze.

After two listens — the first being around the date of release, I irrationally hated it from start to finish. Through the most recent time, I heard it a little more clearly. It's not as bad as I initially thought... but it is still really bad.
Starting with what I was able to tolerate first: "The Silence" is okay. The following track is not as vapid as the rest, and the sentiment of "I hope everything reminds you of me" aligns well. "I'll Never ... read more
So much is so good. The riffs, bass, drum work, vocals, segues, orchestration, chord progression, and dissonance — all great. Its interludes are imperative and interesting and their surrounding tracks flow around them gracefully. And the mix? Absolutely filthy. This is such a gorgeously-diseased work of art.
The standouts:
"-1". The riff that breaks up the bridge...
"Nothing to Gein" is so disgustingly good.
The second "Prod" begins, you just know it's ... read more
Perhaps I'm influenced by what I've seen from Munck within the last seven years and I've come to expect the abnormal nature of his production. Regardless, it doesn't matter. There's something comforting in the slow progression and somber tone, both musically and vocally.
This is an indefinable, sickening, uncomfortable, heartbreaking, and disturbing experience; one where I am afraid to return, as I know the dread it will inject me with. But I can't resist. This is torture.
Transcendental, beautiful torture.
Not only insurmountably better than the original under the name 'BrainStuck' (Ineedcyanide is awful), but this version achieved perfection. The chemistry between the two, the melody and cadence, the instrumental, a subtle vocal cut-in at ~32 seconds that makes all the difference — all amounting to something I'm glad to have discovered.
This is fairly weak compared to 'hypochondriac'. Not only that, but there's so much herein that either confuses or irritates me and consequentially turns me away. The story is too disorganized and unfinished, the lyricism is too self-important, and his performance is over-the-top more often than not. Both interludes and the "freestyle" are unnecessary and vapid. Tracks 4 and 8 are passable.
All else that is merely enjoyable is overshadowed by "rosier/punk2". ... read more
One-by-one, here are some of their problems:
1. Sounds made last minute.
2. "I'm a misfit, that means I don't fit, nah, I don't fit in".
3. Nicki. And claiming it's AGATS2.
4. A "don't do drugs" anthem... under Juice's name.
5. "Not by the hairs on my chinny-chin-chin".
6. What a mess.
7. Lazy chorus and disgusting second verse.
8. WAY too many ad-libs which are WAY too loud.
9. Nah, I'll pass.
10. Vocals sound like he's ... read more
'Still Life' is a simplistic and pleasant experience from beginning to end that is not at all restricted by its year of release. It's timeless.
A few lulls here and there but ultimately nothing displeasing. Though when it's good... it's REALLY good — proven in "Concept 3", "Concept 1", and "Concept 16".
Front-loaded with two decent instrumentals then suffers from Hill's apparent necessity to whine incessantly for the length of the project.
