I am shocked. This certainly is not what I was expecting. Everything on this album works: the excellent production, the raw and rough and sometimes off-putting vocals, and the transcendental instrumentation. It manages to hit all the prog and psychedelic notes while doing its own unique thing, something that is still uniquely Lil Yachty. Even the longer cuts kept me rapt and interested. "Breathing Song" floored me. Her lilting voice and the "no, no, no" refrains and the gut-wrenching vocals all swirl together to create one of the most poignant songs I have heard this year, and my favorite on this album.
Every bit of this album oozes with a beautiful vulnerability. The intimate vocals and folksy instrumentation blend together in a way that sometimes reminds me of "Kiss Yr Frenemies" and sometimes Phoebe Bridgers. However, the more pop-focused ... read more
Perfect for when you want to have a panic attack in the corner of a loud nightclub while high on prescription drugs you stole from your grandmother.
This is some of the noisiest, most aggressive industrial hip hop I've heard in a while. It's somewhat reminiscent of earlier Death Grips stuff, but it does its own thing. A beautiful and reflective piece on the introspection that comes along with grief. Every song is emotionally weighted without being too heavy-handed. There is a wariness to this album, as if it is coming back from war after seeing the worst of humanity. But with each tentative step forward it becomes more and more light-hearted and open, with the vocals prevailing above the dark backing instrumentals.
