Dream Widow - Dream Widow
86

After the first few seconds, sheer disbelief. This is supposed to be the Foo Fighters? The same band that has been stagnating since 2011 at the latest in terms of infectious stadium anthems is now playing the finest thrash metal? And indeed: Dream Widow by Dream Widow is the best Foo Fighters album since "Wasting Light" and quite easy that is. All the more tragic that Taylor Hawkins dies in a hotel room just a few days after its release. So the bitter realisation remains that these ... read more

Everything Everything - Raw Data Feel
86

Even in 2022, if you ask me who my most listened band of the year is, there's only one answer that seems suspiciously boring: Everything Everything. The band has long since arrived in the circle of my all-time favourites, which is not least due to the fact that they have already released six simply outstanding albums; a truly impressive catalogue. Yet the singles from this year's album made me think bad things were coming, because they were more shallow than ever. I'm all the more pleased that ... read more

Thornhill - Heroine
86

A lot here is reminiscent of somewhat heavier Deftones - and in the best possible way. This outstandingly produced, modern rock record brings a breath of fresh air to the alternative metal scene, which has become somewhat lame. The guitars are tuned to Drop Z, the bass growls deeper than is perceptible on many speakers, the drummer thrashes and the singer lifts the whole thing to a literally high atmospheric level. But the most important thing: The songwriting on Heroine has a very high level ... read more

Ásgeir - Time On My Hands
85

It's official: Ásgeir is one of the most likeable people in the world, at the least that's my impression after I saw him playing live earlier this year. Fair, that doesn't say anything about his music - and yet I would definitely also ascribe the attribute "likeable" to his music. Simply an extremely content, beautiful, likeable album that the Icelander throws onto the market here. Away from the mainstream, Ásgeir is more content with writing beautiful songs and ... read more

Northlane - Obsidian
89

Hardly any album was heard more often in 2022 than this latest work by Northlane. And that, although I was very sceptical at the beginning, because the idea of combining Matrix-like rave sounds with the hardest metalcore can certainly go horribly wrong. At least it doesn't here, already the opener "Clarity" sets such a high tempo that it almost makes you dizzy. Especially interesting for me is the production of the whole album, to combine such absurdly low-tuned guitars with the ... read more

Die Nerven - Die Nerven
89

Europa. What a goddamn anthem. The whole album is one single anthem, hard to believe that most of the album wasn't written about 5 minutes ago, but already in 2019. "Und ich dachte irgendwie in Europa stirbt man nie". Now that's a line for a tattoo. It just gives me solid "Joy..." vibes and indeed, with this year's album, Die Nerven could be somewhat described as the German-speaking, slightly noisier brother of the Idles - and that's supposed to be the biggest accolade ... read more

Deadnate - The North Sea
75

Sounds like a Gojira cover band in places. But never reaches the brilliance of their idols.

DITZ - The Great Regression
75

Noisy, nervous, angry, nice.

Spoon - Lucifer on the Sofa
75

Rock's coolest voice back at it again with another solid album.

Gojira - Fortitude
90

Gojira have now reached the very, very top of the list of my favourite bands, and this year's album "Fortitude" cements this position.

Admittedly, the album is not without its flaws, "The Chant" and "The Trails" are perhaps the worst Gojira songs in a long time. But there are also some highlights. "Into The Storm" is a polyrhythmic monster, "Born For One Thing" an excellent single and "Grind" at the end lives up to its name.

Leoniden - Complex Happenings Reduced To A Simple Design
90

Admittedly, Leoniden wants to do a whole lot here. But they also succeed in almost everything. The fact that after the
very calm second album Leoniden take such a turnaround and just let off steam creatively. I didn't see it coming like this.

Within one album of schmaltzy indie pop songs ("L.O.V.E.") to absolute hardcore-like breakers ("Broken Pieces") to the highlight of the record, of the record, the grunge revival "Disappointing Life". What a journey!

Timo Ellis - Death Is Everywhere
91

What kind of a record is that from an EP? I've never heard anything like it. Beautiful, harmonic pop melodies paired with one of the dirtiest guitar sounds of the year.

Four songs, one single joy. Timo Ellis, the previously unknown multi-instrumentalist (all instruments are played by himself) covers us with 20 minutes of material that will last the years (at least for me).

The choruses of Queen, the filth of Mastodon, the humour of De
State, all together in one big pot. It's addictive after a ... read more

Adele - 30
70

Am shocked by myself how rather good I think the album is.

Kills Birds - Married
70

Cough Up Cherries is a hit. The rest not quite yet, besides: Nirvana, anyone?

Low - HEY WHAT
70

Exciting sound painting while still being somehow also a bit boring. Weird.

Kunzite - VISUALS
70

Very exciting new discovery with enormous potential. Strongly reminiscent of early Tame Impala...

TORRES - Thirstier
70

Exciting mixture of rock and electronica, but it doesn't really work for me in the long run.

Dave - We're All Alone In This Together
70

The track with James Blake excels (of course) but also otherwise good Realtalk with whipping, modern beats. A bit monotonous in the long run.

Clairo - Sling
70

Really exceptionally beautiful voice, harmonically sometimes a bit boring.

shame - Drunk Tank Pink
70

Quirky, British, and somehow good again.
