Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
100
For my 100th review, I decided to challenge myself by reviewing “Trout Mask Replica,” one of the most polarizing albums ever made. I’ve had an empty document with just “100th review” for hours. I wasn’t even sure where to start. How do you review an album that actively defies every music convention that we know? How do you review an album that confuses a person even after multiple listens? Well, I tried my best, and writing this review has furthered my ... read more

Richard D. James’ Discography #76: afx’s son

What the fuck

I mean… it’s good for a 5 year old, but it’s clearly just RDJ joking around. This sounds a lot like the 5 previous AFX EPs which were released on the same day as this, and it’s definitely not a coincidence. I guess the joke is kinda funny, thinking about a little kid making experimental music, but that’s all I got from this, simple novelty value.

Richard D. James’ Discography #75: sys700

This EP is just 6 minutes of experimenting with the Roland System 700, and it actually sounds like Aphex Twin, albeit a very demo-sounding version of his music, instead of just random electronic sounds. The beats are relatively interesting, but the two tracks are just not that noteworthy. I can’t help but feel neutral towards “sys700.”

Finally, something interesting!

Aphex Twin trades in electronic beats for strings, and it actually sounds good. This EP is still just electronic experimentation and lacks substance, but it’s pleasant.

More electronic noise.

At least the cover is really cool.

Richard D. James’ Discography #72: fx matrix

More production wankery on this one. The first track is an uninteresting noise music-inspired electronic piece. The second track has less going on, but it’s somehow more interesting. It’s just a minute of warped dialogue about a wedding or something, I don’t know, I really didn’t care to follow along. It sounded like a sample from a movie or a tv show, but it sounds lost and cursed due to the way Richard messes with the ... read more

Hi fellow AOTY user, for my upcoming 700 follower special I wanted to do a list based some research on AOTY user's most listened to albums. All you need to do is send me a link to your last.fm account. If you don't have one, no worries. If you could tell me what is (probably) your top 10 most listened to albums that would great instead. Thanks for your time in advance!

One album per artist. I also frequently edit this list either because an album has grown on me or I’ve recently come across an album I thought was amazing.
