shoutout to the person who had para elian as their highest rated track unfortunately im just different
Kind of falls off after burn the bridge but that first half has some killer refrains and even more killer grooves to it, and the second half isn't quite offensive enough to really ruin the record, just merely okay. Far from a focused project, and if you told me they were more of a singles group i would definitely believe you, but as this is it’s fun
i can admit to part of this being potentially my fault, as I knew jack shit about everything everything minus the fact that they had a new album on the way tonight, so I took it upon myself to finally give this project a listen with 0 expectation and was kind of caught off guard when this record kind of struck me as a well produced pop with some progressive elements, but rarely anything that really got me out of my seat wanting more on most of the cuts. There was definitely some stunners like ... read more
A tight love letter to 70s and 80s dance aesthetics delivered with a sheen to it unlike much i've heard, it's clean in that regard but far from standard; it embraces such a variety of aesthetics that it keeps everything fresh despite. We can describe this variety literally only using the first 3 tracks, which I think is a testament to how consistently it's switching things up. "Weird World" opens with the 80s inspired cinematic qualities you would here from every good synthpop classic ... read more
An eclectic and definitely unfocused little project that doesn't really present itself cohesively but tries out some styles that suit glaive a lot better than what he's been doing in his career this far. I think these tracks are far from the most complete sounding version of this sonic pallate but there's a few tracks out of the 7 that I actually think display so much potential given more time to refine. "hope alaska national anthem" shows that glaive's croony voice fits a folk pop ... read more
MGMT once again reinvent themselves completely for a whole new record, and on this one they take on a style of neo-psych that is very palatable on the surface but subtly multifaceted, and always evolving in subtle ways. This subtly leads Andrew to cleanly and mellow sing over these everchanging soundscapes that are so feathery that you would pass through them upon touch; so pillowy its as if your floating on a bed of clouds. The synthwork on this record is very very interestingly done, they are ... read more
A quirked up psychedelic uplifting experience that sees 2 wizards at their craft tightening their craft on a track list that is equally eclectic as it is undeniably infectious. despite everything it still sticks to it's pop roots, which is admirable considering how many off the wall choices are scattered through this record. they really achieved ultimate widespread appeal with this one; there's a little something for everyone in this charmer of a record. All around smile inducing in it's ... read more
It's crazy how these songs can straight up just never build into anything ever and yet they lock you in and then keep you right where they want you throughout their durations. The groove of this record is entrancing, but to a scary extent. It's scary how hypnotizing this record is, enough to make me meticulously pay attention to 7 minutes of essentially the same, repeating melodies and refrains without ever getting bored, or wanting to quit, or even thinking about calling this record anything ... read more
Really really really great mix of cinematic intensity and space, something that's so confrontational sounding while using such sparse pathways to get to that. There could be like seemingly 4 things in the mix and still this record could achieve a full maximalist sound despite it. And not to mention the voice of chelsea wolfe is filled with anguish so commanding of your attention but in such a way that calls out rather than approaches. I've mentioned just how grand this album is but chelsea ... read more
a cesspit of the most cleanly produced pop music with elements of folk dance and hiphop sporadically thrown in there, only that the record waters down literally any ounce of ethnicity these styles have in favor of making possibly the most palatable amalgamation of a record, only instead of making something actually universally appealing it's quite literally like slop is being injected into my brain through a turkey baster. I will say it occasionally has a few commendable elements, the hooks on ... read more
I'm actually very shocked at just how much this project blew me out of the water, this is some genuinely groundbreaking shit. Seeing an indie-rock record pop up seemingly out of nowhere is by no means a surprise, as in an age of the internet everyone is quick to pick up a guitar and record lo-fi love songs in their bedrooms. So when I gave this a spin expecting an easier enjoyable listen, I was blown away from the very first track. In early 2024, on seemingly a debut record from a band that has ... read more
Another sad case of a record presenting a really really great idea on the first leg, but by the time we reach the end we had already heard everything that was there to offer. I really like how menacing, and slow, and thick these tracks often sound, with the intense moments rather than feeling like mile a minute whiplash instead more your face slowly being melted off your skull. It's a super engaging sound; unlike my past endeavors in death doom as a genre I actually felt the intimidation ... read more
A really lush sound that was done a little rough in execution. I can really really respect the soundscapes this record brings, they are expansive, super pretty, and dense as hell. The guitarwork to be expected was also incredibly done, but I want to especially commend this record for the variety of instrumentation in the first half. For example, the track "Found Hand" all of a sudden goes in this really pretty black ambient direction that works out very well for the atmosphere of this ... read more
Lua is no stranger to electronic music and this project + her general listening diet is enough proof of that, but if that wasn't enough this certainly should be. In a genre like future funk where the name of the game is energy + the sample laced vivid canvas of blaring neon lights, lua delivers all that and then some. This record is not only the fastest, but probably the most energy packed and dense future funk, no, HOUSE record I think i've ever had the joy of hearing. There's a new detail to ... read more
This record, coming not too long after quadecas self proclaimed opus "I Didn't Mean To Haunt You" is in essence a cobbled together list of reasons why that record's greatness wasn't a fluke.
Quadeca no matter what sort of genre he's doing, what lane he's traveling down whether it's pursuing the same grandiose art pop sound he did on his last record (both "under my skin" and "dustcutter" being straight up outtakes from that record) or returning to his roots with ... read more
There's a couple reasons why i think in a sea of a LOT of instrumental hip-hop albums coming out in the modern age of teenagers learning FL Studio and producing their own shit (which i very much respect and encourage) that this record really sticks out in it's execution, past it just being extremely well crafted. The first of which is the concept of this record being based on a 3 disc system, morning-midday, afternoon-evening, and night-dawn respectively. This concept is reflected in the music, ... read more
idk why people are surprised about the quality of this as these eps have never been the most substantial releases from simz, and this definitely isn't an exception. the more hip house funk inspired beats here aren't really complimented that much by simz, and while they definitely occasionally have potential they're never capitalized on as this project constantly feels under baked and the sound palate is under utilized. This project is jam packed full of influences of a lot of bombastic genres; ... read more
good album very meticulously crafted very obviously I also love just how out there and interesting the instrumental palate is but i think it comes together as an album thats pleasant but ultimately unengaging to me. I can most definitely see how the sort of laid back nature of it works for someone but for me personally it just lacks that "something extra" to really give it staying power, atleast in my listening diet. Also respect for how it sounds for its time because despite my ... read more
