Grey Worm has some bops! Even if the production isn't the crispest in the world, the ideas in here seem pretty fleshed out & realized. He offers a pretty relatable lyrical sense as well, which is the most engaging & moving element of this record. Reminds me of what I imagine an Alt-R&B version of Bastille would sound like.
It's certainly a cut above a typical indie pop record, especially with their folksy guitar solos sprinkled throughout the record. While it's not my favorite album of the year, it's still well produced & enjoyable.
I am ridiculously underqualified to review this record given my lack of exposure to Mexican folk music, but this seems like one of the best places to start. Natalia has a strong voice with lots of character, and when backed by some groovy production, it makes for an enjoyable record, even given the language barrier for me.
