'Wonder' is a good step forward for Shawn Mendes, but not a good album as a whole. Shawn's sensetive and expressive vocals are prominent and well performed, the production is much better than what was showcased on his self-titled album too, the driving and dramatic pop and rock instrumentation is quite good. Shawn's romanticized lyrics are quite repetetive and simple, but there are some genuine moments of sweetness too. And while there are moments where the songs are just generic and underwhelming, it's still much better than his past material and provides a bit of variety throughout the tracklisting. So, while the album can feel very bittersweet and melodramatic, there are impressive and lovely ideas here, it's not a bad effort.
