even weirder, disjointed funk from the great d'angelo! very consistent discography, heavily enjoyed, but for all the positives i really think sugah daddy is a really strange tone shift to have mid album, and i don't think it suits the album very well at all (maybe i'm missing something?)
highlights:
ain't that easy, 1000 deaths, another life
lowlights:
sugah daddy, till it's done (tutu)
weirdly darker in places, but nonetheless still the regular sexy, introspective d'angelo that we had on brown sugar, but even further evolved. instrumentals borrow way more from funk and psychedelic music than soul here, with tracks like The Line showing this. big fan
highlights:
the root, spanish joint, untitled (how does it feel)
lowlights:
devil's pie, greatdayndamornin/booty
smooth as hell. boner alert music
highlights:
alright, me and those dreamin' eyes of mine, lady
lowlights:
shit, damn, motherfucker (only lowlight)
what can i say that hasn't already been said, great neo-soul/funk album that feels like a love letter to the genre
but fuck me, california is TERRIBLE he sounds awful
highlights:
me and your mama, zombies, redbone
lowlights:
california (that's it)
funny
highlights:
lifetime achievement award, when he died, as your father i expressly forbid it
lowlights:
touch-tone telephone, man-made object, pizza heroes
super interesting deviation from fragile, way more funk and art rock influences on view here rather than just regular ol plain prog. it grooves, breaks down, and reforms into something expansive and all-encompassing. love prog
highlights:
close to the edge, siberan khatru (favourite)
lowlights:
and you and i
it's just kind of underwhelming prog rock... i've heard roundabout years ago but it genuinely all sounds like the exact same fucking thing the whole way through. it's cohesive in the worst, most unimaginative way possible. expected more but what can u do i guess
highlights:
roundabout, heart of the sunrise
lowlights:
the fish, five per cent for nothing (interlude track but yea)
smooth japanese jazz, what else can be said?!?!
highlights:
it could happen to you, scenery
lowlights:
early summer, willow weep for me
harrowing, dizzy, often scary sounding record that digs its claws even deeper into the gothic rock sound, improving on previous efforts on faith and seventeen seconds. they go even more moody and atmospheric on this record, but turn it less from a somber sound to more of a misanthropic, dare i say evil sound? it seems a little ridiculous to say but i cant believe this came from the same band that made 3 imaginary boys, and songs like "just like heaven" and "close to ... read more
it's just very boring renditions of stuff that was better on tweez... not much to say (it's only a 12 minute ep!!!)
highlights:
n/a

i was kind of expecting something more interesting here... it's kinda just very blank, non-descript jazz-funk for me that doesn't invoke any emotion in me, and it meanders like fuck especially in chameleon's first half
vein melter was beautiful though and is a very slow-tempo arrangement that i much prefer.
highlights:
vein melter, the second half of chameleon

i fucking love slint. spiderland is my favourite record of all time and not a lot of other records come closer, and this just really helps me understand why i love their sophomore project more, its messy, visceral and sharp sounding. its a world of noisy guitars behind precise but loose drum parts played in the freakiest time signatures and it really shows you how special these guys were. that being said, definitely nowhere close as interesting as spiderland but it definitely has a lot of charm ... read more
it's more of the same as heavy rocks before it... they kicked up the energy, despite the introduction and naki kyoku pulling in some of the more minimalist and drone parts of their previous works, but this just had the same issue. it just bores me really bad and for a fucking metal album, that's hard to do. it's a shame!!! i wanted to enjoy it more but what can u do...
highlights:
ibitsu, furi
lowlights:
introduction, akuma no uta
oh man. what i dont like is that it's genuinely all the fucking SAME throughout!!!!!!!!!! it's almost thoughtless riffs, same drum patterns and some attempt of kicking up the energy that wasn't found on previous records, and it just doesn't do anything for me. i'd much rather take feedbacker, flood, even amplifier worship over this.
highlights:
heavy friends, dyna-soar
lowlights:
the bell tower of a sign, korosu
i dont have much to say on this album, it's hammy goth rock from the early 80s cure that doesn't do much for me, very samey throughout OTHER than the 3 track run from other voices to the funeral party, really cool minimal coldwave that's super atmospheric and indicative of their later works, big fan of that
highlights:
other voices, all cats are grey, the funeral party
lowlights:
the holy hour, the drowning man
fucking geese. fucking 3d country. fuck you. i hate that this is amazing and i didnt check it out sooner.
it's indie rock with the strongest country and gospel influence of any album ive heard, and it absolutely relves in it. it's the south turned upside down, and thrown into space, being propelled by cameron winter's newly cowboy-tinged vocal style and a strong rhythm section that reminds me a lot of vision creation newsun by boredoms, which i think is on purpose considering ... read more
geese... so many goose... lot of geeses and gooses
i actually have to laugh at how much this sounds like a bad strokes record, it feels uninspired and emotionally uninvested in whatever it's trying to tell, as incohorent as cameron sounds and how annoying it is that every single fucking song (swear to god) has the same drumming and guitar strumming patterns that make it blend together but not in a cool, fun callback kinda way, more in the "we dont know what else to do" kinda ... read more
honestly very solid debut from well known indie band geese, but it REALLY makes me laugh that they sound so much like the strokes and television if they had a lovechild raised by tame impala, while being another new york band in lieu of the aforementioned. that being said tho! they are definitely more experimental and more interesting sounding than a lot of later strokes does (excluding new abnormal, my fucking baby)
i liked it quite a bit, wish it was on streaming aa

i think maybe it's partly the fact of it being a drone album but FUCK me does it just go on. upon the backdrop of the theme of calm waves, transcending into a tsunami that crashes and destroys everything in its path with raw destructive power, it just feels to drag musically maybe due to them playing too closely to these themes.
part 1 has a really chilling ambience to it, a cool and contained guitar part runs through most of the tracklist and seems to set the mood perfectly for the noise ... read more
