structurally this feels a lot like madvillany. Short songs with abstract, sample heavy beats. Emotionally this feels a lot more unique. The chopped up, abstract samples of vocals or distorted band instruments creates an alienated and estranged atmosphere. This combined with the deadpanned vocal delivery and the intimate lyrics capture Earl’s emotional state really well. However, the album could have been a bit longer.
Vocals are a big flaw. Emotion seems completely shallow. The instrumentals are constantly good, as much as they are totally indie cliches. Nostalgic feeling seems kinda cheap and shallow: with the hitched up reverb and shallow song topics. Occasional cool shoegazey drone.
Almost ambitious. Some super great, simple, enjoyable songs and some alright songs, and a couple complete duds. Kendrick’s rapping is irresistible and fun and serious. Is up there with great early 2010s mixtapes such as Live Love ASAP and XXX
Super super super charming album. Awesome concept: trying to capture human experience, lyrically and sonically . Some all time classic songs, and all time album flow, songwriting, concept and psychedelia. On top of being a treat to listen to
Really special, beautiful vocals. Interesting free flowing songs. Reverby folk production really similar to Carrie & Lowell.
The super sparse starts of songs and general free flowing nature make for a surprisingly challenging listen.
