I think it’s time to revisit this album, one that has floated in my consciousness for at least half a year now. ‘Sweet Heart, Sweet Light’ acts as a fantastic companion album to ‘Songs in A&E’, improving on almost every front. The consistency has been refined and the project is bookended by a beautiful start and even better end. Vocal work is definitely worse, however, the sheer beauty of some songs is what takes centre stage here.
Best Tracks: ‘So Long You Pretty Thing’
Going for more of a pop direction this time around, the band throw together 51 minutes of jumbled music, with most of the songs paying off. ‘Sweet Talk’ and ’Soul on Fire’ are both instant classics, punchy, pop hits that stand out in their huge discography: finally, their experimentation seems to have worked out. Spiritualized return with a project that seems to have lost all of the cohesion / quality present on their previous album. Stale, messy and forgettable rock songs fill up the majority of the tracklist, a step far away from the highlights seen on ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’, whilst the project itself lacks much of a flow or progression. Fortunately, the closer is one of the best in their discography. But that’s all the praise I can give it.
