God the more I listen to this album the more I realize what’s going on. It’s modern classical under the guise of noise rock. It’s amazing.

crazy how noise rock and experimental rock owe so much to this no wave pioneered by Branca, bands like Swans and Sonic Youth being so wholly inspired by his artistry

while I do prefer the instrumental arrangements on Magnolia Electric Co., so many of the vocal performances on this album are so fucking breathtaking and emotional. lord knows I love a man who can belt
this is honestly really beautiful. not only is it heartwarming to hear Daniel finally playing in a studio, but the songs here are genuinely nice despite being pretty straightforward, and they're oftentimes really pretty. I know im probably just saying this because my only previous Johnston album was Hi, How Are You, but his songwriting ability had improved by leaps and bounds here as well.
