This is some really great instrumental indie rock, or midwest emo, or folktronica, or whatever you wanna call it. It kinda fits all three. The quiet and often repetitive vocals plus the occasional samples suit these melancholic, hard-hitting instrumentals super well, especially on tracks like B.O.N.ES.. Maybe I'm just a sucker for anything remotely emo, but this is awesome. I'm surprised it garnered as much attention as it did, considering it wasn't even released on a Friday, but I'm obviously ... read more
I'm unironically upset that the Alex g/Mac Demarco track wasn't much more than an interlude
A long while back I listened to The Garden's 2015 album, "haha". I liked it, but really didn't think it was anything special, and rated it a 75 and moved on with my life. However, lately, I've been coming back to a few songs from that record, such as "Egg" and the titular track "haha". I realize now that these songs are bangers, and I was kinda shocked I didn't like them as much when I first heard them. So, today I decided I should start listening to more of The ... read more
Gorillaz is one of my favorite artists of all time. They’ve released some of my favorite albums of all time. Damon Albarn, while his personality can be frustrating to watch, is someone who I see as a musical genius. Jamie Hewlett, the artist behind the conceptual stories and music videos of the band, has long been an artistic inspiration to me. Them as a duo have, since I was a kid, shown me the possibilities of storytelling and music production, and I have all of their albums up to ... read more
DISCLAIMER: I have not read the accompanying book that was released alongside this record, so I will not be discussing it in this review. Also, trigger/content warning for discussion of suicide.
Dan Barrett is a name that I feel isn’t talked about nearly enough. Everyone always mentions Have a Nice Life and Deathconsciousness and how great that project is, but nobody seems to know about the man behind it all. As far as I know, he’s basically the driving force behind HANL, but ... read more
Artistically, Jeff Rosenstock is many things. A graphic design artist, an acclaimed musician . . . okay, that's not that many, but he's really fucking good at those two things. Jeff is probably best known for his ska punk works, though as of late, his more pop punk-focused released have also been receiving a ton of acclaim. However, this is gonna be a review quite focused on what I consider his most ska record to date (even beating out fucking Ska Dream), as well as his best. This is an ... read more
just got the special edition on vinyl, this shit is so cool
It's a cool concept, but the music itself is just kinda uninteresting. I'm all for use of samples, but the stuff that's cohesive is mostly just straight samples with effects over them, and the more experimental stuff is just boring
alex turner gotta be one of the greatest punk vocalists of all time
