While a passable alt rock album with sufficient Biffy touch for me to enjoy, it's hard to say there's much that's special on this album. Occasionally the lyrics or the guitar hits just right, but most of the time, the mix is too muddy (especially with the drums) to properly enjoy. I promise I don't mean it in a dismissive way but some of these start to sound like Imagine Dragons-style pop songs. The Biffy vibe is present enough, but I can only imagine how much more powerful ... read more
It's a perfectly fine alt rock song but Jonathan Gilmore's mixing results in way too much noise and too little dynamics in the end product. It's a common pitfall many alt rock bands fall into later into their career/in the modern era. I am honestly very disappointed every time, because it results in good songs that I want to listen to but at the same time don't, because I don't want to assault my ears. I am expecting more great songs on the album, but the mixing will ... read more
Honestly a bit of a weird track but Graham Coxon's guitar playing is probably what makes this track solid.
The first half of the album is filler for me. The production is technically pleasant, but also very very sanitized for me. It's soft rock, but so uninteresting both instrumentally and lyrically. I point to their last two albums for cooler sounding albums they've put out in recent years. Robby misses hard with Such A Mystery which is a huge shame, as I actually love so many of his songs with the Goos. The two closing tracks are pretty lame, but passable tracks as fun songs written to ... read more
This felt like it was driven by the idea of making a nice earwormy midtempo rock song, but ended up being lackluster on every aspect (melody, lyrics, production, random guitar solo?). Even though the Goos are long well past their prime they have at least managed to cough up a number of at least competent songs even in their most uninspired moments. Their last two singles have been some of their worst, but I guess I'm still holding out hope that their next album is listenable.
I think this is an alright song. The production is mediocre especially the intro. The message is alright for where the band is right now. But it does certainly leave more to be desired musically. Would be fine with this if it's just a one-off return single before making more fully thought out music.
Returning with an EP 2 years after her last release due to her record label ghosting her, Sara Kays has definitely grown and changed, and so have I. It's quite wonderful to see her back making music again. But this is definitely one of those tough calls where both the artist and the listener has changed and grown, and the music just doesn't hit the same.
Sara's music has always attracted me primarily due to the lyrics. The whole of Camera Shy is quite a sad album to really ... read more
Toledo Punk band release a nice debut EP. Although I really like it I think there's room for improvement. For me it's all the instrumental fills which tend to feel a little boring even if the energy comes back quickly whenever the singer picks up the mic again.
This is a song for the singaporean fans. It's a patriotic song in Singapore and they did it live when they came here.
Very emotional piano-driven song from Ben Kenney, I don't think he makes specific references to his cancer but it does seem to be related to it.
I found this a very compelling listen, even though I've never heard anything like it before.
Motion City Soundtrack does a pretty solid cover but not too sure on the cover by Trampled by Turtles.
Welcome back Sara Kays! apparently Atlantic Records ghosted her so she couldn't release any new music in 2024.
As for the song, it's definitely a new direction. I like this but it's the kind of thing that could get old easily. We'll see what comes next.
This album is really cool because of the way it's very much in the realm of very standard rock. As they put it, this definitely feels like songs even "even grandmas and grandpas will approve". Yet, by simply being above average in aspects like arrangement and songwriting, it really helps to make this quite a compelling listen. The feature (?) on 契囝/Child of God is also pretty cool and helps make the song stand out a bit more. But the climax is obviously at ... read more
Hate to be that guy but these tracks are genuinely better than at least half of the album tracks lol. They definitely have catchier hooks than most of the album songs at least.
here cuz Soupy from the Wonder Years recommended this on their Instagram story. Very fun power pop/pop punk album, maybe one of the "happiest sounding" I've ever heard.
