“Art should disturb the comforted and comfort the disturbed.” - Cesar A. Cruz, 1997

“Is this even an album?” is the question that I ask myself as I write this review. When your very existence is predicated on a convolution of your own identity, it’s a sign you’ve made something uniquely remarkable. But, if I were to apply an accurate label on Superflat, it would be an “auditory experience” or simply a “piece of art” because ... read more

One of the most alien experiences I've had with hip hop in a very long time. Obscure as it is quality, this works as an amateurish precursor to many of the collaborative outings of lo-fi experimentation Dose & Yoni would engage in during the latter stages of their career. It's an eclectic smorgasbord of obtuse plunderphonics and sample collages, enhanced by the trademark low fidelity nature early Anticon possessed. I wouldn't even call it purely hip hop in a lot of aspects (and you ... read more

Far, far better than Mista Thug Isolation. I don't think any record will ever appeal to me so much in the same way that Oblivion Access does. It's a twisted, spiteful journey through the darkest corners of a broken misanthrope's internal monologue, jaded and bitter from the throes of the human condition. It's an unfiltered wretchedness I only find adequately replicated by the gravest moments of Goblin or The Downward Spiral. It musically shifts from sonic voids of inaccessibility to psychedelic ... read more

An interesting look into Coin Locker Kid's artistic abilities before going onto create his most revered work, The Ghost Sonata is an obtusely minimal journey through abstract soundscapes of electronic and hip hop that works between the fringes of definable genre, creating an atmosphere of lo-fi, off-putting ambience and general weirdness that invokes an odd, yet palpable sense of uneasiness within the listener. Gretle. is incredible, even if CLK himself disagrees.

Nothing has ever sounded like this before, and I doubt anything else ever will. Carrying a completely indiscernible sense of overall genre and a massive amount of artistic ambition, creativity is at an unparalleled peak on SHOPPING MUSIC., resulting in the most interesting and promising debut of the past year by a gigantic margin. Near everything across the respectively wide spectrums of rock, hip hop & electronic and then some is assimilated into this hulking entity of beautiful musical ... read more

"Your mother can't be with you anymore."

Quite possibly the most emotionally harrowing project under the Coin Locker Kid name to date, "The Holy" is a stripped-back display of modernist depression in its purest form. It completely abandons CLK's already tenuous hip hop roots and delves even further into experimental pop territory, with the organic instrumentation and expressive songwriting furthering the thematics of emotional personalization. The way in which he ... read more
