I don't think that Thornhill has produced a bad song. That being said, this one was a slow grower for me. I think it was some of the production choices on this album had me a little confused from song to song, but I think it was because I hadn't listened the album from top to bottom , because once I did, I saw the vision these guys had.
It definitely is Thornhill's more experimental album of their current trifecta, using lots of different guitar tones, and leaned more into a ... read more
With Echo Sonata being my first real exposure to ERRA, I was intrigued by what the band was going to offer from this album. I wasn't disappointed, and there was some heft to a number of these tracks. That being said, none of them were life-changingly spectacular. The album is very good at what it attempts to accomplish.
Strengths: I was a sucker for some of the baritone growls that preceded the breakdowns, from "those in power send your sons to purge the earth", or "the ... read more
This album took a second for me to really digest because I was enamored with BODIES on its release. Even though TDP was originally my exposure to this band through Red Summer, which I adored from first listen, I hadn't listened to the album start to finish. And holy crap was I missing out. Every song on this album hits. The interludes feel intentional and not filler. I love that All the Light We Don't See leads beautifully into Lily and the Moon, and Netherplace creates a lot of space ... read more
Why did you go and shorten this bro? The Digital Remains version is a thousand times better than this. The flow is way interrupted and cut out some of the best atmospheric parts of the song. Real shame tbh.
Really goes to show how much the autotune was doing a disservice to this guy's vocals. Much better than the EP. In the Name of the Father was fairly decent for a single, but this is more promising for a first album.
Might be my AOTY so far, I've been recommended to listen to Karnivool by friends, and since the opening with Ghost, I've been hooked with every second of this album. The mixing is brilliant, the lyrics are incredibly captivating, and the atmosphere cultivated is something special. This might be one of the finest expressions of progressive rock/metal to come out recently, right alongside Spiritbox's Tsunami Sea and Deftones's Private Music.
Honestly was a little disappointed by this album. It feels like Joji spread himself a little too thin on this one. I personally enjoyed Smithereens a lot, I felt like it was more complete of an album. The singles for PITW were great -- I think Love You Less is the best song on this album -- but the tracks in the middle felt very bland and generic lofi/R&B/dream pop. I wish he had played into the electronic sound a little bit more, tracks like Pixelated Kisses and Sojourn were actually ... read more
Holy crap.
What an EP. This is one of those moments where music becomes a real experience. The atmosphere that this band creates is incredible. Each song feels like a movement of a symphony -- all in an effort to convey the whole of the narrative of (what I feel) is about disassociation and mental health. There is never a dull moment in this piece.
My only problem is that there wasn't MORE! There were moments where I felt like vocals could've been that weren't but I can also ... read more
Meh, but In the Name of the Father certainly did show the kind of stuff President is capable of making. The rest of the EP felt very generic pop-metal.
Update: After a bit of time passing with this EPs release, I haven't come back to it at all. Not very memorable.
Having just discovered this band through the Dark Pool and really enjoying it, I was surprised how they've chosen to lean more towards the Deftones-style sound (which I love), but it can be a little on the nose at times. I really like the punky deliveries on a ton of the tracks, and the atmospheric elements are great. Not sure how I felt about CRUSH, that one felt like Past Self on the new Sleep Token album, really didn't care for it. Other than that, really cohesive album, I love ... read more
Great finisher for the album, feels like Blurryface and Trench's brainchild, with Vessel references and nods to Clancy.
Update: As I've listened to this album more over the last month, the cohesiveness and lyricism of this album has continued to strike me. It might edge out Vessel as my second favorite TOP album, right behind the behemoth Trench.
Loved it! the ambient parts of the tracks were reminiscent of some of what they did in their ep, and marisa's vocals really were clean on this. I do miss some of Anthony's iconic screaming on a few of these tracks, but its really well produced and stands on its own against their wonderful first album. Excited to continue to see more from them! (Anthony give me more screams... I love green street and jerome town!)
Edit: I need to listen to more vein.fm lol
