Best Track: Speaking Terms
Worst Track: Pristine
Aggressively overrated, it all just sounds like one long song. I've given it a half star bonus for its sincerity.
But I didn't really care for Soccer Mommy either. Don't understand why music publications are trying to shove lazy trap male albums, lazy indie female albums and lazy sexually explicit LGBT albums down our throat. Take 2-3 out of 10 off the Pitchfork score for either of these sub-genres to get the real score.
By-the-books indie record. Nothing at all innovative about this. Mostly well executed with patchy vocals. But does that really deserve a 3 star rating?
The voice/accent reminds me of the early 2000s in the worst possible way. Some of the longer/higher notes are particularly rough. Though, I largely love the Lorde/Alt-J indie voice trend of 2012-2016 so I can imagine a niche that enjoy this style of singing.
The lyrics are underwhelming. Generally not a fan of "i'm so pathetic, pls just love me" anthems. Tame Impala aside but that grooves so hard you can look past it. The instrumentals here are nothing special.
Maybe I just need to be 16 and stupid to relate. It's not even that shred of innocence/immaturity that you cling onto in the recesses of your psyche, that guilty pleasure immature overreaction - think Daughter Youth vibes. Instead, it's just some dumb and shallow emotions you sorta have for 3 months when you're 15 and grow out of that don't leave an impression.
