the instrumental work is remarkable. the guitar sounds sticky and permeates through the music. meanwhile, the synths are calming, and they bestow some electronic aspects to the music.
there’s a comforting dreaminess present throughout ‘head of roses‘.
the album is a trip comprised of many different vibes:
“price of blue” conveys an indie-country combination. the solos are searing.
“and we're all just wearing bodies
like a costume 'til we die” is a phrase that sums up the atmosphere of the album. jenn wasner is shedding her skin, and she’s presenting a different musical side on her sophomore record.
“hard way” is an ambient bop that cultivates a sense of foreboding
“walking” is a shoegazey track full of warm atmospherics
the vocal performance of “one more hour” is engaging and rather stunning.
“no question” begins as a calm, gritty electronic peace full of heavenly vocals.
“awake for sunrise” is a heartbreaking tour de force of songwriting. the ending is memorable and this track serves as a great predecessor to the final track, and title track, “head of roses”.
“head of roses” is the slow, epic conclusion to the album. the lyrics are haunting.
