Elliott Smith - Either/Or

sweet, melancholy, yearnful a cult classic for post-folk listeners

Radiohead - In Rainbows
93

even though all the amazing things you've heard about this album have already been said i want to say them in my own words. in rainbows is a experience only complete with a scattered mind and noise canceling headphones. released in 2008 this radiohead record pioneered the streaming era by making this album free and available to download on the radiohead website. not to dwell on the avant garde marketing of this record, its instrumentation from the band and mature and depressing songwriting ... read more

J Dilla - Donuts

this album was heavily made on dilla's hospital bed, while putting that into perspective makes tracks like, "workinonit" and "don't cry" so heartbreaking. of course like any jay dee album every song is well thought out and calculated.

Steve Lacy - Gemini Rights
92

this album is a, BENCHMARK for indie r&b as a genre. steve gives 10 songs with topics like unrequited love and effects of a home-wrecker, (among other things) while holding and maintaining his songwriting with stellar production. what makes gemini rights special is that it's so personal and unique but still caters to a typical young adult/teenager love life of today.

Tyler, The Creator - Wolf

this album is a turning point for tyler. i believe this is when he really, really, started to make a name for himself, as a result of group-mate, frank ocean's "channel ORANGE" and the constant motivation from longtime mentor pharrell williams. tyler saw that he could make quality music and have people talking about his work without the brass and ultimately immature lyrics and messy production. tracks like "48" or "rusty" really solidifies his skill as a ... read more

Frank Ocean - channel ORANGE

one of the best albums of the 2010's, in my opinion the "sgt. pepper lonely heart" of the 2010's. superb and exemplary performance in storytelling. amazing and grand vocal recordings from frank. the way the production of songs like, pyramids or pink matter really make the tracks emotional and relatable. overall, this is a must listen for people who want to indulge in the alternative r&b genre.

personal favorites-sweet life, pyramids, golden girl, crack rock, and super ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - IGOR
97

amazing, heartbreaking, and relatable album. reinventing the synth while at the same time giving listeners excellent storytelling. "a boy is a gun" in my opinion is the best song of 2019. this song ties everything together within the world of igor. from the sound, to the message, to the features this album is made for people who love music that people blatantly don't like.
personal favorites-a boy is a gun, thank you, running out of time, igor's theme
