*Insert obligatory comment about Father John Misty's musical adjacency to Fleet Foxes*
It's good. Kinda patchy or bland on occasion but generally not much to dislike. However in the folk scene it doesn't really do anything to standout so I feel like this won't have much staying power. Tracks like "Nancy From Now On", "O I Long to Feel Your Arms Around Me", "Only Son of the Ladiesman", and "Now I'm Learning to Love the War" were ... read more
Phenomenal.
This (so far) is the Coltrane album for me. While I rate Giant Steps and Blue Train the same, the two other Coltrane album's I've heard, this one is slightly ahead of the pack for me. It's refined, smooth, seamless. Through four tracks, Coltrane and his quartet provide four unique that unify into one very cohesive whole. The opening title track based on the legendary song of the same name, is agreeably this album's greatest part. Everything about it is perfect. ... read more
Ferg's new album is a mess, but its messy quality doesn't totally restrict it from providing good sounding music. I think Ferg's solo music gets too much hate, so I was excited to hear what he had to offer in 2024. Granted the singles were pretty dope, I expected something more put together. While Ferg sounds inspired, laying tracks that are far less superficial than your average trap banger, there is very little cohesion here, and it's unfortunate how quick that clutter ... read more
Listened to the version without Drama but imma post my review here anyway.
Idk what it is about this album. Actually I do. Anyways, I don't really like WSG but I'm not sure if I'm having a change of heart or if this is just my thing, but I'm actually quite into this. The 11 EP was okay, but this is special. His vocals sound less dragged and more effortful. The production is less bullshit drumless and more dope sampling over hard boom-bap drums, allowing Gunn to actually ... read more
Enya and this song in particular were introduced to me when I was a lot younger, falling asleep on the night drives home from a visit to my grandparents house. Those were some of the most serene moments of my life and this song always takes me back there. Enya is a legend and this song (among many others) immortalizes her talent.
Having been absolutely blown away by my first experience with Laura Stevenson with The Big Freeze, it's a shame I didn't dive further sooner. Self titled albums are always interesting, representing an artists creativity and personality to some degree. While I think that certainly applies to The Big Freeze as well, it might feel more grounded on her self titled release. I don't think it's as good, but it's a great collection of tracks. It's soft-dramatic tones and ... read more
Almost never losing steam, Blue Train is an admirable work full of intricacies and emotive tones that embodies Coltrane in a preliminary stage. Coltrane would release much of his more popular and acclaimed work after this, but this album was easily his most important at its time. It's the slick drumwork, the solos and the reiterations of musical passages sprinkled all about that make this album a wonder. It's not totally unpredictable but it feels like a more broken down, more complex ... read more
Kind of a mess but tolerable more often than not. I share most of the common complaints for this album. Camp consistently has some of the worst lyrics I've heard in a while on a hip-hop album. The production also sounds pretty cheap, unoriginal, and mostly hasn't aged well. It sounds nice here and there but dips into a tacky status too often not to mention. As I said, it's tolerable more often than it isn't, but the sorta non-highlights non-lowlights tracks are just barely ... read more
Liz Harris + Bathtub is a super effective combo.
This is easily my favourite listen in recency. I’ll save most of the Liz Harris praise for future reviews but I’ll reiterate how much I’ve been putting off and savouring her discography because I love it that much. Projects under the Grouper title have skyrocketed to the top of my charts and most listened artists faster than any other artist I’ve indulged in. For someone who primarily makes dronier, more ambient music, ... read more
Daniel Caesar is undeniably talented, but this just isn't really for me. I appreciate his artistic drive, but at the same time I found less to latch onto as the album continued. The first two tracks are pretty great, "Get You" being my favourite of the entire album. "Best Part" is a cool duet with H.E.R. but it would sound a whole lot better and more refreshing if I hadn't already heard it a million times at my retail job. Tracks like "Hold Me Down", and ... read more
11 is just a prelude of sorts, but from someone who doesn't like Westside Gunn, this is actually not bad. Yes it's just an EP and doesn't even crack 20 minutes, but it feels more cohesive and cared for than other Gunn project's I've heard. The production is a little sloggy and Gunn's performances aren't exactly getting a step up, but the genuine more heartfelt moments make this a worthy listen. Favourite was "PAULIN PAULIN PAULIN"
This album rollout isn't looking promising so far, but I guess most things he could release are better than Blockbusta. Also are these covers AI? Cut that shit Busta.
IDK is disgustingly slept on on this website but I'm glad this album is already getting some good reception. Feeling significantly more put together than his last album but reaching similar peaks of sound, BRAVADO + INTiMO is yet another dope project in IDK's catalogue. He's back with an album full of playlist worthy material. Expectedly, there's a ton to unpack lyrically. IDK always dives deep when it comes to what he's talking about on a track, whether he's ... read more
Weakest Cynthoni release yet. Idk what it is but I'm really not finding too much to grasp to. I mean the production is decent but this doesn't have the umph of the previous two EP's or Sewerslvt's other work for that matter. Also doesn't help that sonically it does almost nothing new. I did enjoy the glitchiness of the last track though.
I hate Tyler glaze I really do, and that's not what this is, this album's just really damn good.
Since the drop on the intro teaser I've been increasingly anticipating this album. When the drums hit I just got a boost of serotonin and hearing that extended verse makes "St. Chroma" one of the hardest songs not only on this album but that I've heard all year. Like holy FUCK it goes hard. The grit of this song and "Rah Tah Tah" just invigorate you ... read more
ILLIT do little to distinguish themselves among the Korean dance-pop scene but that's kinda okay. This EP is certainly not long or elaborate, and you could certainly pin it as being manufactured, but it sounds sweet and has a charm to it, even when musically execution can be kinda underwhelming. The first two tracks are bops and "Tick Tack"'s infectious energy keeps it's quirk from nonsensifying the track. It's hard to really hook onto something like this when ... read more
If you've heard the solo works of the mob, you know they can go harder than this, but I feel like for a group project they don't always have to. A$AP didn't have to go super grand on this but just kinda do their thing and have fun with it. While that maybe holds it back from being greater, I kinda like it better this way with it's laid back, easygoing, banger-producing formula. There's some underwhelming stuff on here like "Crazy Brazy" and particularly ... read more
From what I've heard so far, Lofty's instrumental albums have offered some bazazz to make them stand out. This one feels largely uninspired and unpolished though. He's no legendary producer, and his efforts feel even more drawn back here. From poor mixing to unquantised drums to mediocre sampling, Buffalo doesn't offer very much. A good half of the track list is okay, but I really went out of this listen with nothing particularly noteworthy. There's even a Denzel Curry ... read more
It's difficult to find redemption in this project. While most of Lofty's work is pretty effortless, but cool stuff, here it just seems beyond care. I mean the production is cool on the first few tracks and "Real Love" was okay, but his vocals are more underwhelming than usual and further tracks provide no good substance. "Natural" and "Y Ly" are literally the same song I thought I was tripping when I listened. Why would you nearly duplicate a song if it ... read more
While I've found Griselda and adjacent collectives to really lose touch with the genre, Boldy has always been a super consistent artist, proving his longevity with Across the Tracks just earlier this year. I initially skipped out on this release but wanted to come back to it to clear out Boldy's run in 2024. Him and Craven definitely work well together. It's no amazing masterpiece, and as a matter of fact we've heard several Boldy projects that sound very similar prior to ... read more
