태연 [TAEYEON] - INVU
75

Edit: I lied "Timeless" is decent. Also shoutout "INVU", "Toddler", "Siren", "Heart", "Weekend", and "Ending Credits", all great songs.

On INVU, Taeyeon leans more into that poppier, more accessible sound, but I think I like it as much as purpose. The highs are definitely not as good, but it does feel more consistent. The only song I really felt I didn't like was "Timeless". But there's really nothing to ... read more

¥$ - VULTURES 2
15

Absolutely horrible. At least Vultures 1 had some musical redemption. This has pretty much nothing. If the tracks aren’t horrible mixed, then they’re beyond half baked. Like “530”…are we kidding here? Kanye rambles over a nothing instrumental about nothing, barely even saying words at all. For the stuff that is at least believably finished, it doesn’t even sound good.

The uninspired production, vocals, and garbage writing on pretty much every song makes me ... read more

Red Velvet - Cosmic (Cosmie Ver.)

“Sweet Dreams” is pretty much as good if not a little worse than the rest of the material on the EP. Kind of feels like a pointless release but not bad.

Busta Rhymes - Calm Down
85

Two hip-hop elites with three minute verses of straight going off.

JPEGMAFIA - I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU
80

Is it a near 9/10 record? Nah, but I still think it's a great release from Peggy. After phenomenal back to back albums with LP! and Scaring the Hoes, expectations were through the roof with this one. I have a feeling this is going to be a grower, so I can't say he didn't hit his mark here. Nontheless, the stuff here is quality, albeit kind of all over the place. Criticizing cohesion for an artist like Peggy might feel unwarranted considering just how out of the ballpark he is ... read more

Rx Papi & Gud - Foreign Exchange
70

I get it but it's still a bit rough around the edges. I suppose 19 minutes is the perfect length for a style like this. Great, vibey production and a cadence/flow that works wayyyy more often than it should. I mean the guy literally sounds like he's straight rambling a lot of the time but it's honestly fitting. But yea the production is pretty stellar on most of the tracks, particularly on "12 Stout Street", "Albino Steve", and "Still In Da Hood". ... read more

태연 [TAEYEON] - Purpose
75

The beauty of solo K-Pop acts is that they more consistently feel like a heartfelt, personal and non-generic piece of music. That's mostly the case for Purpose. This album presents a lot of beautiful moments, and while its far from overproduced trash, there are some tones of pop here that feel kinda campy. "Find Me" and "LOL" were my least favourites, coming across as pretty generic and mid pop. "Better Babe" feels like it should fall under this category too ... read more

Johnny Cash - I Walk the Line
80

If you don't fw Johnny Cash please do not talk to me.

Yea this album is super charming. This is the type of country I really mess with, not to hate on modern country for the trend, but this just clicks with me way more. It's formulaic but it damn works. Cash has an amazing cadence, decent storytelling, and perhaps more than anything else, an ability to portray intense amounts of emotion and/or genuineness in his music. The occasional backing singer really adds a lot too, especially ... read more

Ice Spice - Y2K!
40

Eh it's not THAT bad. Ice Spice is a horrible lyricist and the production is usually mediocre to bad but there is some listenable material here. Most of the project is just completely nothing material with the same lyrics recycled 100 times over, but there is some alright stuff. I'll start with the best. "Did It First" is genuinely a bop. Like this song has a ton of replay value, the flows are dope from both Cench and Spice, and the production is such a vibe. "Oh ... read more

Travis Scott - STARGAZING

Psychedelics got me goin' crazy...

Rakim - G.O.Ds NETWORK - REB7RTH
70

I never thought we'd see the day where a new Rakim album came out but here we are. With plenty of amazing music under his belt, Rakim has nothing to prove except that he's not washed, and well, he did that. This is a good album. The production is quite solid and in contrast to most post prime hip hop legend music, doesn't sound dated. A good amount of the features put in work and make for some decent posse cuts, though I was unfortunately disappointed with that nonsense Chino ... read more

Bryson Tiller - Bryson Tiller
55

Actually thought it started out pretty good. Songs like "Attention" and "Stay Gold" Start things out decent. I think the self aware, suggestive hook vocals on "Persuasion" are kinda stupid though. "Ciao!" and "Random Access Memory (RAM)" were solid too. "Find My Way" is definitely my favourite of the bunch I don't really know why it just clicked. But the rest... I mean it's just boring more than anything else, I think most ... read more

NxWorries - WHY LAWD?
75

I really do feel obligated to rate this higher because it's quality as hell but when critiquing it I really do have to consider how much I'm enjoying it. Neo-soul is not my genre of choice, and while I think there's plenty of great stuff coming from it, I almost never will sit down and listen to it. I appreciate this release a ton. It's the long awaited second album from NxWorries. It really is a big deal. The whole album is a great, smooth, perfectly blended together mix of ... read more

Fivio Foreign - Pain & Love 2
60

The sequel to his debut EP is certainly not his weakest work, but Fivio isn't nearly as fleshed out as he was on B.I.B.L.E. and he perhaps never will be. I don't think it's as bad as the user score, but it's not the best listen. While far from innovative, Fivio does deliver some solid bangers including "Who Knew" and "Get Deady". "No Love Lost" was one of my favourites too. I really like Vory as a feature artists and he works well with Fivio. ... read more

Rich Brian - The Sailor
75

I believe there's a magnum opus for Rich Brian in the future but he's not really there yet. On The Sailor, Rich Brian breaks through musical barriers, dabbling in different areas of hip hop and pop, all encompassed by a very grand image. That said, I think the album's greatest weakness is its inability to stay in one place. Of course, variation can be vital to the intrigue of an album, but mostly when it feels more coordinated. It's a mixed bag to the definition, but still ... read more

OutKast - ATLiens / Wheelz of Steel
100

One of the best most infectious hooks in hip hop ever.

Big Daddy Kane - Veteranz' Day
80

Veteranz Day is a really great final project effort from BDK. Adapting well to the progression of the genre, Kane was able to construct a dense and long but fulfilling boom bap project to end off the 90s. From front to back, Kane backs some super dope production with his signature extremely slick flows and lyricism. Despite the progression or hip-hop essentially forcing Kane into making an album like this, he sounds extremely comfortable. The guy dabbles perfectly in the newer, poppier strands ... read more

Fivio Foreign - Pain & Love
45

“Pop Out” is dope but the rest is nothing drill music with no substance and no creativity. This is Fivio at his most primitive.

Denzel Curry - King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2
80

Banger after banger after banger. There is truly nothing really to complain about with this project. Denzel feels like he's in a similar position in his career to Kendrick: both have fulfilled themselves with introspective masterpieces and want to have a bit of fun now. That's exactly what this album is. The sequel to The Vol. 1 mixtape that dropped 12 years ago is packed with tight production, dope features, and sharp rapping from Zel. Is he on the top of his game? Not necessarily, ... read more

Young Thug - Beautiful Thugger Girls
75

It's more commercially tuned, but the the genre blending and catchiness of this album really suits thugger well. With the vast majority of his projects, you get some stuff that just isn't it; uninspired, underdeveloped, or uncared for. With this album, there wasn't a notable outlier. "On Fire" is probably the worst song but it's just kinda dry. It has some enjoyable flows and some other small redeeming qualities. The whole project kinda hovers at around a 7-7.5 in ... read more
