I thought I'd never say this, but maybe Cyr is worst than Zeitgeist????? At least that 2007 album has a couple of really nice tracks and is some 20 minutes shorter that this bloated bore. To be honest, I do appreciate the Pumpkins' (Corgan's) ambition to return to double albums, especially with a sound not immediately associated with the band. However, I do wish that same conceptual ambition had translated into more exciting music. As it is, most of the tracks are too similar to make its 72 minutes even remotely engaging. Among its 20 tracks, there's neither a slam dunk success nor a complete disaster - everything is mostly flat. I didn't hate Cyr; I was completely indifferent to it.
The Shiny grab bag is clearly the best in my opinion. There’s five really great tunes on it even if “Solara” is pure garbage and almost spoils that ridiculously short LP.
What’s weird is if the Pumpkins did a three disc Best Of and Disc Three was all from this century, it actually could hold up well in comparison to the other two discs provided the right song selection was made. Billy can clearly still craft great tunes, just not an LP’s worth. Sort of like when U2 delivered albums with major flaws in 2004 and 2009 yet the highlights on each were tremendous.
