One of my favorite Modern R&B projects of the 2010s. I had the pleasure of seeing Daniel live on his recent tour for his album Never Enough, he played a couple tracks off of this like loose, best part and get you. My appreciation for those songs has skyrocketed, daniel caesar is a pure talent and with more concise story building could create a geniunely amazing piece of work, however this album is still awesome and a must listen if you like R&B, it starts amazing and does end up ... read more
This album to me is the definition of hit or miss, he really goes banger for horrible song and as an album I just can’t rate it any higher than this. In my opinion significantly better than any other recent drake drops and like I said it has some classics on it, but mixed with the amount of filler and then just bad songs, i can’t support it as a complete album.
The predecessor to Meet The Woo 2, an album I did not enjoy but took a few tracks from I appreciate how this album brought more authentic NY Drill energy and had less of a run time so the repetitive beats didn’t wear on you so much. Some boring songs but only one actual bad song, and Dior, Hawk Em and Brother Man slap. RIP Smoke fun lil album.
Free Tay-K unless he killed people, if he did I hope he learn his lesson and be welcomed back into society soon type shit. Gotta Blast is such a banger, and there’s other bangers on this album like The Race, Murder She Wrote, Saran Pack. But the rest is just mid. The I<3 my choppa remix, who let maxo kream on this song. ASSS. Some bangers to take away from and would’ve liked to see him grow as an artist.
Why does NDA have to suck so much ass. Once again pleasantly surprised by the direction this album took tho I didn’t love it. I thought some songs were amazing and the rest were average. Except for NDA, which geniunely sucks ass. Not a super cohesive listen but still has some standouts that made this an enjoyable listen.
A drop in quality from the last Nat King Cole album I reviewed. Found myself uninterested in the atmosphere of the album which is a huge thing for me in jazz. Some slow tracks with very poor writing. Then some safe, basic tracks that are just ok. I’d say maybe 1 occasional good song but overall not up to his standards at all.
I know it's hard to rank this album without it seeming ironic but I genuinely don't mind Ice Spice. This project is just too short and it has the abomination "Munch" on it. Ice Spice brings a lot of energy and I think the beats and sample use throughout are decent. But at the end of the day it's a hyper-sexual pop-rap album that's only 7 songs long and only had 2 of it songs not released as singles. Princess Diana and Gangsta Boo slap tho. If she filled an album with drill songs like ... read more
As my first true introduction to Tems she now has one more fan for life. The current era of R&B is a very mixed bag with most people opting for the simplest way to the top of the charts but Tems infuses passion, soul, and plenty of culture into her music. So excited for her next solo project as this one had many gems to base my excitement of. The only reason it falters is my pure enjoyment, it was a little too short and had a meaningless interlude that halted the momentum. Tems is a true ... read more
One of if not the most underrated cole project. All the parts of 4 your eyez only and all the parts of 2014 forest hills drive that I love were mashed together on this album for an introspective vibe still filled with competent and high level rapping from Cole himself. A concise fun listen that only falters in terms of the slipped up finish to the album and in some cases a little too average.
I’m a huge fan of autumn he’s a guy I listen to a lot in my select time and he’s one of my favourite rappers doing it right now. But this project is bloated and in a certain way, same old same old. The tracks are fun and some are even introspective in a way I quite liked but there’s just so much filler on this project. If Autumn focused on a concise album it could be great but right now this is his best effort and it’s just pretty good.
You know it’s a westside gunn album when half of it is amazing and the other half is just ok. True to its nature HWH7 has some all time westside gunn favourites for me and some songs I hadn’t heard before that pleasantly surprised me. But uneventful song writing holds it back and like most of his other projects, un needed filler and un needed features drag it down a lil. I still recommend a listen and for the listener to take what they like out of this album and enjoy it, because ... read more
According to the album of the year community this is a hot take. But this album doesn’t do it for me like that. Chaka Khan is a queen with a beautiful and commanding voice. That on this project seems to be wasted with lacklustre writing and just OK production. It’s brought up to a 70 by the sheer talent that she is and as a listening experience it’s very doable. But only a couple songs stood out to me and were songs I would give second listens to.
Billie Holiday sounds like a cottage. As my introduction to her I delved into this compilation first hand and will get onto albums later. Not many standouts on this album but that’s not a bad thing. Most of the material is just good, it all fits a similar framework and is some of the most elegant jazz I’ve listened to. It just didn’t blow me away in a certain way. Still a fun and solid listen through.
Without 3 songs on this album it’s an ok album borderline mid. But simply because Loving Machine, Taking what’s not yours and Not allowed exist. That’s what makes this album higher for me. I’m a huge TV girl fan but critically I think this album tries different genres a lil too much and in some cases unsuccessfully. But the hits really hit and bring it up a lot for me. Overall a reasonable run time and fun intuitive tracks sprinkled through the otherwise middling track ... read more
I’m not sexist I swear, Nicki Minaj is a talented rapper who doesn’t rap enough on this project or when she does it’s accompanied by lack luster hooks or beats. I think all the features on this album are great but it loses marks for its failed attempts at dance tracks. It’s got classics like Only and Anaconda and lesser known bangers like Feeling Myself and Favorite. Those bring it to overall just an ok album. But the misses miss and the track list is barely hit or miss ... read more
Bo Jackson would be proud. Boldy James sounds wise beyond his years and hardened by his upbringing in the best way possible and conveys these stories through some beautiful production by the Alchemist. A great album with a concise run time and true to Alchemist standards fitting transitions that make the album feel like one big listening experience. It does start relatively slow but finds its stride throughout. Now I have to talk about Guilt, holy fuck what a song, it reminds me in a way of ... read more
Bland dream pop/indie album with not much there. Disappointed honestly. Having only heard Meet The Frownies, one of their singles from 2010 this album was not for me. Pretty safe plays on the good songs and the worse songs are just a case of uninteresting hooks and annoying instrumentals. One of the few positives was the opening song to the album which I thought was going to reflect the rest of it, sadly it did not. Final thoughts is a safe album with some half decent songs that overall fell ... read more
Kendrick’s most personal and emotional album to date is a quest through the mind of a human being. I can’t lie, without auntie diaries this album is in the 80s but that song just doesn’t hit me right, paired with some other questionable tracks that seem less passionate than the rest of the album. But the good is great. Like we’ve always seen his pure rapping ability is on another level and the creative beats he works through with somewhat abstract instrumentation are hit ... read more
God I love this album, a classic west coast mixtape that truly defined a genre and more than that, an era. The rapping is vicious over some of the most inventive beats to this day in the rap game. Some points taken away for the pure content of some songs but still an amazing album front to back. Never a dull moment and a great listen through. G-Funk was made by this album and to this day the forefather of the genre is the best it’s ever been.
Some of the better jazz rap cuts from early gunn but too short with ineventive features. Decent listen
