over the years Marissa Nadler's music has gone progressively darker and now it has acquired an edge and growl with this collaboration with Stephen Brodsky. she also has become a much more disciplined songwriter and everything here is refined and purposeful. long-time fans might miss some of the more blowsy moments of The Saga of Mayflower May or Strangers, but her signature romanticism is more redirected than restrained. top songs are "Space Ghost" I and II, but "Watch the Time" has a real throwback quality to it that is very appealing. "Dead West" is from another planet and one of my favorite songs of 2019. when I heard the low sax on Morphine's "In Spite of Me", I got the chills and it is the better cover of the two. this is probably a one-off but it would be fascinating to hear what they could do with a larger budget and an actual studio.
