JPEGMAFIA - All My Heroes Are Cornballs

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

I'm going to start by saying that Veteran, to me, is incredibly overrated. Critically acclaimed, the album earned JPEGMAFIA more projection, but sounded to me like a giant mess, a directionless project that won hearts for its fickle and somewhat unpredictable production. Its experimental sounding cost dearly to a returnable listen due to its lack of interesting melodies.

But the rapper apparently solved the problem, since All My Heroes Are Cornballs delivers just that. No wonder the single Jesus Forgive Me I am a Thot surprised me immensely. What Peggy achieves in his new endeavor is to balance his heaviest and softest moments. The single quoted is a good example of this: It strikes a delicious balance between a sample-packed jazzy instrumental and a heavy industrial moment, not to mention its melodic chorus.

Throughout the project, JPEGMAFIA delivers exactly the balance needed for a slightly more open and approachable sound, without compromising its experimental and glitchy side. In All My Heroes Are Cornballs, Peggy's sound finds an evolution similar to what Tyler, The Creator brought from Cherry Bomb to Flower Boy: an opening needed to expand the horizons of an artist with good ideas but who couldn't get out of his own comfort zone until now.
