Radiohead - The Bends

Revisited Radiohead Deep-Dive: LP 2

this is one hell of an upgrade. i've always enjoyed The Bends as an album a lot, but i never really felt like i truly understood just how good it was. Planet Telex kicks it off, and i'd consider it about as strong as You from Pablo Honey as an opener. the leg-up it has on that track, though, is the production and texturing, which could go for the rest of the songs on this album. everything is so layered and well-mixed. even songs that don't catch my ear as ... read more

Revisited Radiohead Deep-Dive: Extras & B-sides

even more crazily good singles because of course. it's interesting just how fast these guys managed to work up their songwriting game, going from making songs everyone else was making at the time to genuine emotional masterclasses. as for the extras on here, they're once again just so good, although i'm actually surprised Maquiladora was scrapped for The Bends. i feel like a reworked version of it would've fit pretty well in there. Killer ... read more

Revisited Radiohead Deep-Dive: EP 3

what a fantastic single, man. My Iron Lung, i mean. i fucking love this song so much. it's such a great change of pace after the monotony of the band's debut era. Thom has grown so much as a compelling writer and frontman, too, which i very much appreciate. what's funny about this EP is it actually contains the first song i ever listened to by Radiohead, that song being Permanent Daylight (edit: i lied. it's the second song i heard from the band after ... read more

better than i remember, at least! this album starts so incredibly strong, which would be nice if it was able to keep up with those first two tracks. after Creep, however, only a cut here and there would get me interested. the production is sorta rough overall, with some moments probably not hitting as hard as they should in a sonic sense. Thom's lyrical writing is clearly not nearly as developed as it would be down the line, as usually what he's trying to ... read more

Revisited Radiohead Deep-Dive: Extras & B-sides

this is one of the few songs i actually do enjoy a good amount off Pablo Honey, even if that's mostly just because of the MTV performance. the b-sides here are kinda whatever, though. not bad, not great. they're about what i was expecting when deciding to check out this early point in time for the band.

Revisited Radiohead Deep-Dive: EP 2

why are all of these b-sides better than the actual tracklist of Pablo Honey? like these tracks aren't crazy or anything but they're at least decently memorable, whereas most of PH feels like filler. i'm genuinely baffled that they went with something like "Vegetable" over "Inside My Head".

Radiohead - Drill

Revisited Radiohead Deep-Dive: EP 1

honestly better than i thought it'd be, save for the last track. i'm a sucker for this kind of old shitty demo stuff though, so i guess i shouldn't be too surprised.

didn't have a whole lot to say about Knocknarea other than that i loved it. same goes for this one, just was hoping for a little more variation. hopefully when they decide to take on writing an album they can show some more versatility with their styles of playing. the basic formula is incredible, it just needs to be tweaked here and there to make a masterpiece.

Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me

and i thought The Glow, Pt. 2 was sad.

the premise of this album doesn't need to be stated. everything found here is just so painful. there are moments of beauty, but i feel like for the most part this record is just simply real. it's so visceral and right there. just writing stuff about this hurts. the tracks that got me the most were Swims, Soria Moria, and Crow, in case you're curious. i really don't think i can listen to this again anytime soon. the last line is ... read more

[88 -> 95] can't put into words how this makes me feel now. i remember the moment i found out about his death and that day has haunted me since. it's such a disturbing thought that i can rarely stomach this project. when i can, though, it's absolutely genius. the layering, the texture, the soft vocals. it's all there and it's all so well recorded. the fact he made this in his room astounds me. once again rest in peace, Kai. you will forever be an inspiration to upcoming artists like ... read more

Steely Dan - Aja

Got this one recommended to me by an irl friend. This is genuinely such an engaging listen. Everything is so well textured and layered in the mix. The way these songs progress and eventually break out into these massively rewarding choruses is awesome. My only complaint as of right now is that some identity is lost in the verses and I kept asking myself if I’d already heard one bit or another already in a previous track. I’m just gonna hope that fades with time, though, cause damn ... read more

Talking Heads Deep Dive #1

it's really interesting to see what roots these guys came from considering what they'd go on to do with Remain in Light. seems like they've always had that exciting, feel-good atmosphere to their music judging by the cuts on '77. i think this is a very enjoyable entry in their discography, although there is clearly room for improvement. as of right now some of these tracks just don't feel as compelling as they could be or have some elements that could have been ... read more

Yard Act - Where's My Utopia?

Haven’t heard their previous effort, but after hearing this I don’t really want to. I was very lukewarm on everything while listening, although I did enjoy The Undertow quite a bit, so there’s that. Hoping that whatever they do next sticks with me more.

Tapir! - The Pilgrim, Their God & The King Of My Decrepit Mountain

Really in love with the sound of this, but the 3 act structure does make it feel disjointed and I was very worn out by the time it ended. Lots of potential, though.

Friko - Where we've been, Where we go from here

A nice throwback to old indie with some great personal touches to make it stand out. Some cuts blew me away, others were just pretty good. Well-rounded is probably the best way to put it. Hopefully the band can find ways to experiment and come into their own a little more, as I feel like sometimes they do lean a little too hard on their influences even if that doesn’t take too much away.

Quadeca - SCRAPYARD

For a while I was worried about overrating this but honestly it stands right up there with IDMTHY. Genuinely no misses for me. I’ve had this in rotation since it came out. The way quinkie is able to make such lush, detailed, and truly beautiful soundscapes is incredible. Texas Blue and Dustcutter are prime examples, with the former having these nice flute flourishes reminiscent of light blue skies and open fields and the latter experimenting with a fun guitar bend sample and bitcrush. ... read more

[72 —> 78 —> 88] this album is fucking awesome

original review:
Listened to this a while ago and forgot to rate it. Probably gonna relisten soon cause I feel like I’m missing something. It’s good and I get that it’s a shoegaze classic, but I kinda just hear noise and that gets boring after the first few tracks. I guess all I should say is that I prefer what this influenced way more over what this actually is.
