OH DAMN, EDDIE GOT A SWORD, AIN'T NO STOPPING HIM NOW!!!
Yeah, I don't care anymore. Only Dickinson-led Maiden record to be in the red, and only Maiden album in general to be in the red aside from the atrocious Virtual XI. And honestly, I don't really see any reason why I have any need to justify the reasoning. I genuinely believe that Senjutsu will end up going down as one of Maiden's all time lowest points. Even some of their other low points that everyone can universally agree on at least ... read more
Did King Crimson ever get as close to pure filler in their golden run as In The Wake Of Poseidon?
It should probably be noted before I get any further that I don't dislike In The Wake Of Poseidon at all. But in a discography as flawless as Crimsons 1969-1974 run, this is the album that easily sticks out the most as aimless and pointless. And regardless of how understandable that may be, it's undeniably disappointing. I don't think I've come across a single person that hasn't come across this ... read more
"'Perfect' isn't when there isn't anything left to add, it's when there isn't anything left to take away."
I forget where exactly I heard that quote, who said it, and I probably paraphrased it, but I feel like a lot of my tastes in many different things changed once that clicked with me. I remember first seeing it and thinking "Not necessarily", but as time has gone on, the quote has stuck with me and only proven itself to be true whenever I come across something like this ... read more
Okay, maybe I spoke too soon with The ConstruKction Of Light, because I seem to always forget just how little I care for anything on The Power To Believe.
King Crimson's most recent release is lacking in everything that manages to make even albums like ConstruKction Of Light interesting. Instrumentally, it's one of their most basic records, and vocal-wise, it's just as bad as ConstruKction Of Light. So with that said, it's safe to say that this is actually my least favourite record in their ... read more
Sorry Rage Against The Machine self-titled, but Boris with Merzbow's Rock Dream is now my favourite metal album of all time.
This team-up is simply perfect. Although Boris and Merzbow's first collaborations were very rough around the edges, once they got a grasp of what worked best - being Merzbow simply adding his noise to Boris' already complete songs - you could really feel Merzbow adding to the band as a whole. Like these songs were made for Akita to be there. I mean, take Feedbacker for ... read more
Guess this review's happening sooner than expected. What can I say? I've just been in a huge King Crimson mood and am too excited to talk about the albums that I actually love, even if it means spending time on the albums that I don't care for at all.
So, The ConstruKction Of Light... yeah, it's the worst King Crimson album. There you go. Review done. You can go home now.
Ah, but you actually want some elaboration on that, don't you? Or maybe you don't. Everyone who are even aware of this ... read more
I've been listening to Talk Talk's final two albums for months at this point. I probably haven't listened to them enough to confidently say that I've properly "familiarized" myself with them, but I've definitely listened to them enough times to have a solid enough opinion of the band - or at least the band at that period of their career. And throughout my knowledge of this band's existence - since long before I ever listened to Spirit Of Eden for the very first time - there's always ... read more
Figured I'd just get their late career albums out of the way first, because honestly, I do not care for their most recent three albums all that much at all.
I mean, classic '70s prog band - and perhaps the best and most consistent one at that - going metal? And it's actually pretty good? Yeah, that's cool and all, but "pretty good" unfortunately doesn't translate to "great and memorable". If there was literally one thing holding this album back from easily being in the ... read more
From what I've read, Goto broke Midori up because she simply stopped finding it fun. And unfortunately, with their last studio release, you can kind of get that sense; that the band themselves are sort of drifting apart.
It's definitely upsetting to admit, since, in the short time that I've been listening to them, Midori have already cemented themselves as being one of the most abrasive, embracive, lovable, and never-endingly fun artists out there, but Shinsekai, despite sounding like ... read more
This is the best comedy album in decades. All the songs here are perfect examples of raunchy satire done right. These're the songs that Frank Zappa wish he could've written. I rated this in accordance to its ranking in the funniest records I've ever heard, second being Masturbate In Praise Of Satan and first being Diabły Wzywają. Definitely a record to listen to when you want to laugh at 30 year old white chicks complaining about their high school dates.
Okay, it's official, Midori are the best band to ever walk the earth. How people are capable of making music this good and it not even being their absolute best effort is beyond me. That said, Second is better and that is a fact.
Also, I guess me liking the anime tiddy album is me finally succumbing to my inner weeb. I guess there's no turning back at this point.
But yeah, this is peak rock right here. Like, I don't even know how to properly explain it. I've been listening to this and Second ... read more
Mini review time: Alkaline Pink is back with his best album yet. Although the first half doesn't really pique my interest as much as the rest of the record, what with the first three tracks in particular being quite generic and the fourth one not being as memorable as what comes after, it's undeniable that it picks up steam over the next few tracks and makes for some of the best moments in Alkaline Pink's discography so far. As with all Alkaline Pink projects, it sets up an atmosphere ... read more
Lizard will always be that one King Crimson album that will leave listeners on one extreme or the other; considering it one of the band's weakest, or considering it one of the band's strongest. As someone who once considered it to be one of their weakest and always thought that it would be the album of theirs that I'd return to the least, I can now say that it has grown on me to the point where it is definitely in my top five of their discography and is one of my most listened albums from them. ... read more
With a new Billie Eilish record on the horizon, I figured I may as well return to this album and see if it's aged better than expected or like milk. I mean, for an album as instantly polarizing as this one, managing to maintain that divide in music listener's opinions for a whole two years at this point while also being one of the most praised modern records from critics and famous musicians as well, surely there's something interesting about this album that I may have missed two years ago when ... read more
Quick mini review time: A fun listen. I love the retro gaming aesthetic, it honestly makes me feel like booting up my old PS1 again, and I'm not just saying that because of the cover art. But some of the songs definitely went on longer than they needed. Honestly, only a few of them felt like they fully made up for their run time.
For a long fucking time during my Zappa binge, I was really trying to make up my mind whether or not I'd even bother listening to this, let alone rating it and adding it to my list. But honestly, just for the sake of having a complete list, I'll just go ahead and rate this the only comprehensible score for this disgusting grave digging.
I'll tell ya what, the Zappa Family Trust really aren't the worst thing out there. Thanks to them we have plenty of great Zappa albums that would be seen as ... read more
A better case for the Doug Yule line-up was never made.
Even though the earlier two studio albums with John Cale are easily the things that keep me returning to this band so often, and those two Yule albums are pretty hit-or-miss, I think this box set proves that that poppier sound Lou went for at the end of the Velvet's career wasn't just them "selling out". He seriously thrived in this sound. I mean, the various pop rock versions of I'm Waiting For The Man have managed to dethrone ... read more
When I was asked to give this album a listen, I'm not gonna lie, I was pretty much assuming that this was going to be just another average user-made project that I'd likely forget about listening to by the time the day is done. And as much as I hate to admit it, can anybody blame me? I mean, it's not like AOTY music has a very good track record. There're definitely some albums that stick out amongst the rest as ones that are very much worth your time, sure, but those are generally very rare ... read more
Yeah, I should probably explain this.
So, this is currently my weirdest Zappa take. I mean, this mediocre album, known as one of his most forgettable and throwaway additions to his ridiculously lengthy discography, the album only notable for housing the hugely successful by Zappa standards but incredibly polarizing Valley Girl, and I'm rating it this highly? Yes. Yes I am. Well, here's the thing; Valley Girl aside, this album is actually a really fun listen. Definitely not one of his ... read more
This. This, right here. This shows that rock is very much alive and well, and that we don't need to be so fixated on past trends in order to make genuinely compelling, unique, genre-pushing music.
I'm gonna be honest, the 2020s have been absolutely abysmal for music. It seems that every significant artist has run dry of interesting ideas and are now copying each other, and in the case of rock, past acts in order to maintain a consistent image instead of looking for legitimate inspiration and ... read more
