I am extremely fond of this lady here Mahalia. I completely missed the buzz for this release though, I have made it my Sunday morning album for the last 3 weeks and now I can put down my thoughts on the album.
I definitely feel like there was a decline from Love and Compromise but not because the music is bad, she just tackled similar themes better on her debut. That's like my summary of the album as a whole.

I had to make time to sample Ms. Monet early. I wasn't aware of her when the first Jaguar dropped. I also couldn't tell where this album was going based on the singles.
I loved Smoke, I like Party Girls and On My Mama has really grown on me.
Other than the very obvious Kaytranada-produced song Alright (which I love) this album is so 70's soul-coded. For example, a song like How Does It Make You Feel could have been a Stylistics song in another world and I am here for it!

An album I enjoy but I hadn't listened to in ages. There's a little of what I disliked from her debut on this, that stream-of-conscious writing thing Amy liked to do but in a more organized way. Many songs I loved and some I thought were ok not bad.
If you listened to the deluxe version and didn't already know she was a Brit, the reggae songs are there to remind you. Britain has had a poignant love affair with reggae that cut across all backgrounds it seems.

One Monday morning I think it was after the Soul Train Awards, after watching Coco Jones deliver a soul-stirring performance of ICU YouTube suggested an artist by the name Q performing a song called Today on the very same award show. I am here reviewing this album because of that day. I immediately became a Q fan.

A very abbreviated summary of my thoughts on her debut is that Amy is a very talented lyricist who has trouble organizing her lyrics. She displayed a very great ear for melodies and storytelling but was hit or miss with how she structured her songs. The album sounds like a collection of well-produced demos.
